This renunciation of Baliol's in favor of Bruce is an historical fact, and it was made in France. Memory was now busy with the thoughts of Bruce.

The treaty was very unpopular in England, and it is not surprising, therefore, that, when Edward Baliol in 1332 made his attempt to mount the Scotch throne, Edward III. gave him indirect assistance, and that after Baliol's dethronement in 1333 an invasion of Scotland was resolved on. On July 19 Edward defeated the Scots at the battle of Halidon Hill.

The eyes of the coxswain strained upon Deacon's face. Deacon gulped. Strangely a picture of his father filled his mind. His face hardened. "All right! Tell him to throw his oar away and swing with the rest. Don't move your rudder now. Keep it straight as long as you can." From astern the sharp eyes of the Shelburne cox had detected the accident to Baliol's Number Six.

Upon the old man being required to do homage for his lands in Scotland to the new monarch of that country, he indignantly refused, exclaiming, "I am Baliol's sovereign, not Baliol mine; and rather than consent to such a homage, I resign my lands in Annandale to my son, the Earl of Carrick."

But although it was a great privilege to be admitted to wait on my excellent friend in the morning, or be invited to her dinner or evening parties, I prized still higher the right which I had acquired, by old acquaintance, of visiting Baliol's Lodging upon the chance of finding its venerable inhabitant preparing for tea, just about six o'clock in the evening.

News of Baliol's improved form began to be disseminated in the daily press by qualified observers of rowing form who were beginning to flock to the scene of the regatta from New York, Philadelphia, and various New England cities. Dr. Nicholls was reticent, but no one could say that his demeanour was marked by gloom.

"Ten strokes more, boys!" The prow of the Shelburne shell was on a line with Baliol's Number Two. "One two three four " The bow of the Shelburne boat plunged up abeam Baliol's bow oar. "Five six God, boys! seven " The voice of the coxswain swept upward in a shrill scream. A gun boomed; the air rocked with the screech and roar of whistles. Slowly Deacon opened his eyes.

When we arrived, we found his majesty in close conversation with the Earl of Athol, who had persuaded him the disaster at Dunbar was decisive, and that if he wished to save his life, he must immediately go to the King of England, then at Montrose, and surrender himself to his mercy. "Douglas tried to alter Baliol's resolution, but without effect.

Baliol's Lodging, so was the mansion named, reared its high stack of chimneys, among which were seen a turret or two, and one of those small projecting platforms called bartizans, above the mean and modern buildings which line the south side of the Canongate, towards the lower end of that street, and not distant from the Palace.

Notwithstanding Baliol's resolution to keep awake and assist his friends in their enterprise, he was so overcome by fatigue that he fell asleep soon after supper, and so gave De Valence full opportunity to unveil his widely-grasping mind to the Scottish chiefs.
