Its spectrum was remarkable for being ``continuous, like that of the nebula itself. A continuous spectrum is supposed to represent a body, or a mass, which is either solid or liquid, or composed of gas under great pressure. In January, 1892, a new star was suddenly seen in the constellation Auriga.
The remaining objects of special interest in Auriga may be briefly mentioned: 26, triple star, magnitudes five, eight, and eleven, distances 12", p. 268°, and 26", p. 113°; 14, triple star, magnitudes five, seven and a half, and eleven, distances 14", p. 224°, and 12.6", p. 342°, the last difficult for moderate apertures; lambda, double, magnitudes five and nine, distance 121", p. 13°; epsilon, variable, generally of third magnitude, but has been seen of only four and a half magnitude; 41, double, magnitudes five and six, distance 8", p. 354°; 996, 1067, 1119, and 1166, clusters all well worth inspection, 1119 being especially beautiful.
The dusk had already settled; ahead of her the lights of the city shone blurred through the greyness, while above the housetops Auriga was driving higher in the east.
It was, in the opinion of some, the finest object of the kind since 1861. In traversing the constellation Auriga on its début in these latitudes, it outshone Capella. On June 24 and some subsequent nights, it was unmatched in brilliancy by any star in the heavens.
The driver is master over the horses if he controls them as he should, and as he can; but there are occasions when he becomes negligent, and then for a time he will have to let go the reins: Fertur equis auriga, nec audit currus habenas. One must admit that there is always within us enough power over our will, but we do not always bethink ourselves of employing it.
Extreme instances of variable stars are the new stars such as those detected by Hipparchus, Tycho Brahe, and Kepler, of which many have been found in the last half-century. One of the latest great "Novae" was discovered in Auriga by a Scotsman, Dr.
"Now, until we have acquired a certain amount of ability" examining the books more closely "our best chance will lie in the neighborhood of a giant star known to us as Capella." "Capella." Billie had drawn a star-chart to her side. "Where is that located?" "In Auriga, about half-way from Orion to the Pole Star. She's a big yellow sun.
The Light appeared to me to be distinctly brighter than the visible part of the Milky Way which included the brilliant stretches in Auriga and Perseus, and its color, if one may speak of color in connection with such an object, seemed richer than that of the galactic band; but I did not think of it as yellow, although Humboldt has described it as resembling a golden curtain drawn over the stars, and Du Chaillu in Equatorial Africa found it of a bright yellow color.
I twas situated in the constellation of Auriga, and was noticed on February 1. It remained fairly bright until March 6, when it began to die down; but it has now sunk so low that it can only be seen in the very largest telescopes.
In months when the heavens at night are filled with constellations of peculiar beauty, may we not suppose that the politician, emerging from the Town Hall amid the cheers and execrations of the voice that represents the voice of God, lifts up his eyes unto the heavens, where prone Orion still grasps his sword, and Auriga drives his chariot of fire, and the pole star hangs immovable, by which Ulysses set his helm?
