Previous to the Famine there was a large and steady emigration from Ireland for many years, independent of Government aid. The total colonial and foreign emigration between 1831 and 1841 amounted to 403,459, to which the returns add 25,012, for probable births, that item being calculated at one and a-half per cent. per annum; making a total of 428,471.

Such is the story of the military tribune Publius Decius modelled on the courageous deed of Marcus Calpurnius Flamma, or whatever he was called, in the first Punic war; such is the recurrence of the conquest of Privernum by Gaius Plautius in the year 425, which second conquest alone is registered in the triumphal Fasti; such is the self-immolation of Publius Decius, repeated, as is well known, in the case of his son in 459.

Four years later the industry had shrunk one-half; and it has never recovered its early importance * * In 1882, the tonnage amounted to 193,459; in 1866, to 89,336. The coastwise merchant trade, on the other hand, has been jealously guarded against competition and otherwise fostered ever since 1789, when the first discriminatory tonnage tax was enforced.

At last, after a quarter of an hour's work, when all had gone through it and agreed that it was correct, they returned and said to him, "Multiply 324,683 by 459,852." Jack thought for a few seconds and then taking the pencil and paper wrote down the answer: 149,306,126,916. "Why, Jack, thou be'est a conjurer," one exclaimed, while the others broke out into a shout of astonishment.

The cession of the island to king Pyrrhus of Epirus in 459 certainly removed to a great extent the apprehensions which they had cherished; but the affairs of Corcyra continued to occupy the Tarentines in the year 464, for instance, they helped to protect Pyrrhus in possession of the island against Demetrius and in like manner Agathocles did not cease to give the Tarentines uneasiness by his Italian policy.

The indicative might have been expected; the expression almost = consecuti sumus, consecutus aliquis est. Roby, 1546; G. 252, Rem. 3; H. 486, III. VIRTUTE ET RECTE FACTIS: the same opinion is enforced in Tusc. 1, 109. QUID SEQUATUR: 'the future'; cf. Lucr. 1, 459 transactum quid sit in aevo, Tum quae res instet, quid porro deinde sequatur.

He next solicited the king of France to join with him in mediating between the duke of Savoy and his subjects of the valleys; and received for answer, that It was reported that a regiment of Irish Catholics formed a part of this detachment; and to them were attributed, of course, the most horrible barbarities. Leger, iii. Stouppe, Preface. Thurloe, iii. 412, 459, 460.

Some of the facts of last year's traffic are astounding: the total number of passengers conveyed was 85,391,095 twelve millions more than in the preceding year; and the aggregate returns amounted to L.14,997,459. What a difference when compared with the sum paid for travel and transport twenty years ago!

The report of the General Land Office shows that there were 2,459,601 acres less disposed of during this than during the last year. More than one-half of this decrease was in lands disposed of under the homestead and timber-culture laws.

And so the author himself, from whom I quote, and who defends the Patristic and Anglican doctrine that there are untruths which are not lies, says, "Under the name of mental reservation theologians authorise many lies, when there is for them a grave reason and proportionate," i.e. to their character p. 459. And so St. Alfonso, in another treatise, quotes St.
