In 1838 this famous copy of the immortal work was sold by auction amongst the members, in what was probably the very room Dickens had in mind when describing the meetings of Mr. Pickwick and his friends. It was bought by J. Buckham for 13s. 6d.

Yesterday there was only 13s. 6d. in hand, which was enough to meet the necessities of the day, but not sufficient to enable us to take in the usual quantity of bread. This morning we were in much need, not only because there were no means for procuring dinner in the Boys’ and Girls’-Orphan-Houses, but also because, this being Saturday, we had to procure provisions for two days.

The number at present on the books is 72. There were also two other adult schools assisted during the past year. The total amount of means which has been expended during the last twenty-three years in connection with the schools, which have been either entirely or in part supported by the funds of this Institution, amounts to £7,938, 13s. 4d.

The fees of a marriage by banns vary from 11s. 6d. to 13s. 6d. and 15s. 6d., according to the parish or district wherein the marriage may take place. Hours in which Marriages may be Celebrated.

It was built by the Presbyterians. The first authentic mention of its minister is in 1700, when the Rev. Samuel Evans "collected on the brief for Torrington at a meeting of Protestant Dissenters held at the White Hart, Hammersmith, 13s. 6d." In the Brook Green Road Nos. 41 to 45 contain an orphanage called St. Mary's Catholic Orphanage for Girls.

The total of the expenses £1111. 13s. 7 1/2d. There are, at present, 86 Orphans in the three houses, i. e. 31 in the Girls’-Orphan-House, 31 in the Infant-Orphan-House, and 24 in the Boys’-Orphan-House. The whole number of Orphans, who have been under our care, from April 11, 1836, to Dec. 9, 1838, amounts to 110. God’s blessing has most manifestly rested upon this part of the work. For, 1.

A Nationalist Board was elected in 1880, and a Nationalist chairman in 1884. 1884 was a very good year, but in that year no fewer than 3434 persons received outdoor relief, at a cost of £2534, 13s. 10d., making an average per head of 14s. 9d.! And at the present time £5000 nominal worth of dishonoured cheques of the authorities were flying all over the county!

Such an income, paltry as it seems, may be invaluable; it may supplement her scanty earnings: it may enable her to take a holiday: it may give her time to look about her: it may keep her out of the sweater's hands: it may help her to develop her powers and to step into the front rank. What gratitude would not the necessitous gentlewoman bestow upon any who would endow her with 13s. 6d. a week?

May the Lord fill our hearts with gratitude, for having thus condescended to use us! II. The income which the Lord has given me during this year is: My part of the freewill offerings through the boxes £135 13s. 2 1/4d. Money given to me by saints in and out of Bristol £92 7s. 6d. Altogether. . . £228 0s. 8 1/4d.

The Hepburns rose to the earldom of Bothwell on the death of Ramsay, a favourite of James III., who had arranged to kidnap James IV. with his brother, and hand them over to Henry VII., for 277 pounds, 13s. 4d.! Nothing came of this, and a truce with England was arranged in 1491.
