Kamgar Khan continued to lead the Imperial army aimlessly about the country, and in January, 1761, found himself near the town of Bihar. He had 35 to 40 thousand cavalry, maintained chiefly by plunder, but his only musketeers and artillery were those commanded by Law, i.e. 125 Europeans and 200 sepoys, with 18 guns of small calibre.
Thus three years after the death of the celebrated Manchu Emperor Kang Hsi, in 1720, the population had risen to 125 millions. At the beginning of the reign of the no less illustrious Ch'ien Lung it was returned at 145 millions; towards the end of his reign, in 1783, it had doubled, and was given as 283 millions.

Hsuan-chwang does not give the name of this murderer; see in Julien's "Vie et Voyages de Hiouen-thsang," p. 125, "a heretical Brahman killed a woman and calumniated Buddha." This I carefully reckoned by timing, taking into account every halt of ever so small a duration in our march in a due North line between two latitudes.
