These they carried, but were once more expelled from the Little Redan, Marolle and De Pontevès falling dead at the head of their brigades, and Mellinet, Bisson, and Bourbaki being wounded. The French still held the curtain, and Bosquet now ordered up the two field-batteries then standing behind the Victoria redoubt.
Bourbaki, as already mentioned, commanded the Guard, and at the head of the army corps were MacMahon, Frossard, Bazaine, Ladmerault, Failly, Canrobert, and Felix Douay. Both Frossard and Failly, however, were at first made subordinate to Bazaine.
We landed a goat for Bourbaki's father; the innocent animal caused terrible fright and great admiration. All the men retreated behind trunks or rocks and no one dared touch the strange creature.
