It is not surprising to find among the early works of Shakespeare that some of the characters, however true to life, nay, because true to life, are almost impossible to be represented on the stage. Certainly Romeo presents us with a character of the kind. Shakespeare's knowledge of human nature seems to have antedated his knowledge of the stage.

Absolutely no evidence of Spanish influence was encountered in all the excavations at Sikyatki no trace of metal, glass, or other object of Caucasian manufacture such as I have mentioned as having been taken from the ruins of Awatobi thus confirming the native tradition that the catastrophe of Sikyatki antedated the middle of the sixteenth century, when the first Spaniards entered the country.

Their local commonwealths had not antedated the Federal Union, but were in a way children of the central government; and they felt that they belonged to the Union in a way that was rarely shared by an inhabitant of Massachusetts or South Carolina. Their national feeling did not prevent them from being in some respects extremely local and provincial in their point of view.

Westminster Abbey was among her favorite haunts; its ancient aisles, its storied windows, its thousand memories of a past which antedated by so many centuries the civilization of her native land, appealed deeply to the ardent imagination of the impassioned girl. Here was a world of which she had read and dreamed, but whose over-mastering, living influence was now for the first time felt.

I have antedated this little episode delightful for more reasons than I set down here because I do not wish to trouble my readers with two descriptions of the same island and those mere passing glimpses. There are two craters, I should say, in Grenada, beside the harbour.

There was no reason for delay, since the kingdom of Pergamon had technically become a province with the death of Attalus the Third. The Ephesians indeed even antedated this event, and adopted an era which commenced with the September of the year 134, the reason for this anticipation being the usual Asiatic custom of beginning the civil year with the autumnal equinox.

The discovery of the murder and of Miss Vaughan's senseless body might have accounted for it, but his incoherence had antedated that unless, indeed, he knew of the murder before he left the grounds. That thought gave me a sudden shock, and I put it away from me, not daring to pursue it farther. As to the house, its deserted condition seemed sinister and threatening.

Anuradhapura, as wonderful in its way as Pompeii or Herculaneum, is known as the ancient capital of Ceylon, and Pollonarua as the mediæval, but even the former is antedated by other half-buried cities in the island, that of Bintenne, for instance, which exhibits ruins of great interest and of admitted antiquity.

He couldn't, very well, for its date antedated his own birth-date.

Wherever he appeared, either in London or the provinces, he was greeted with enthusiasm, and he established a lasting reputation. His appearance in England antedated that of Paganini by about five years, and it has been questioned whether the impression which he made would have been less if he had appeared after instead of before the great Italian.
