United States or Mayotte ? Vote for the TOP Country of the Week !

I often wonder if I would not have been better off financially if I had kept on working from a Kansas City headquarters instead of emigrating to the East. I might have gone on this way for a long time, in contentment, for my profits were steadily mounting and my markets extending. But one day my wanderings extended as far as Chicago, and there I ran across an old friend of student days.

The republican notions which the greater portion of the lower classes emigrating from the old country have been drilled into, lead them to believe that in the United States all men are equal, and that thus they have a splendid vault to make from poverty to wealth, an easy spring from a state of dependency to one of vast importance and consideration.

The Government, justly fearing that there might be persons so anxious to possess themselves of the moneys appropriated by law for the removal and support of emigrating Indians, as to resort to fraudulent means for the purpose, by letters warned the Indian agent at Buffalo to be on his guard against such imposition.

For skilled artisans, or those brought up to a regular trade, there are good wages to be had, and constant work; but a "gentleman," or clerk unless he intends reversing the whole training of his life, which he will find an extremely difficult thing to do had far better go and break stones on the highways at home, than think to improve his condition by emigrating to America!

I learnt afterwards that the very worst that was said of them was even less than the truth." "Of course, you knew nothing of Stebbins being a Mormon?" "Oh! sir, how could I? There was nothing said of that. He pretended he was emigrating to Oregon, where a good many had gone. Had I known the truth, I should have drowned myself rather than have gone with him!"

My advice is, however, founded on one hypothesis; namely, that you are perfectly sincere, you will be contented with a rough life, and with a moderate fortune at the end of your probation. Don't dream of emigrating if you want to make a million, or the tenth of a million. Don't dream of emigrating unless you can enjoy its hardships, to bear them is not enough!

Having told my father my story, he told me his. It was simply this the story of hundreds, thousands. Tempted by the favourable accounts he had heard and read of Australia, he had come to the resolution of emigrating; had, with this view, sold off at home; and here he was.

When he became more calm, I requested him to explain himself; and learned from him his own history and that of his companion. They were schoolfellows, cousins, and fellow-apprentices; had served their time as joiners; and then left their native village, to pursue their calling in the capital, with some views, though not matured, of emigrating to America.

He entertained at one time the project of emigrating to America; but, abandoning this, he enlisted as Parliamentary reporter for the "Morning Post," walking seventeen miles to his country-home every Saturday evening, and returning afoot every Monday morning.

Lister, another Registrar General, says: "I don't think the new Ordinance had any real effect, or could have had any effect upon the sale of women. I don't think any good is done by preventing women emigrating to San Francisco or other places, as their fate is just the same whether they go or not."
