Ogden Goelet , and Mrs. Daniel Butterfield . On the next block, Charles F. Hoffman , and August Hecksher ; and between Fifty-first and Fifty-second, William B. Coster , William B.O. Field , and Robert Goelet . Then, on to the Plaza, comes the sweep of the houses of the Vanderbilts, and the residence of Lewis Stuyvesant Chanler , Samuel Untermeyer , F. Lewisohn , H. McK. Twombly , William Rockefeller , Mrs.

The same generation habitually addicted to cursing the memory of Jay Gould, and taunting his children and grandchildren with the reminders of his thefts, speaks with traditional respect of the wealth of such families as the Astors and the Vanderbilts.

Be glad that an old Vanderbilt had brains enough to build great railroad systems. Don't denounce him or begrudge him the fortune he made. His work was worth the money. Let us say to his little descendants the pee wee Vanderbilts of to-day: "You have had enough now.

Two of the girls who had come up from the bargain square with her, on the return of Miss Stein and their other seniors, looked after Win as she passed out of the restaurant. "There goes Miss Thank-you-I-beg-your-pardon," said the young lady who had wondered if 2884 were a spy. "She's got a smile as if she was invited to tea with the Vanderbilts."

This signifies that it is only a question of a short time when all or most of the railroads of the United States will be directed by one all-powerful and all-embracing trust. But this does not by any means denote that the Vanderbilts have been stripped of their wealth.

This railroad has already received a Government subsidy of $500,000, in addition to the free gift of a perpetual franchise, on the ground that "the railroad was necessary to the development of the archipelago." But the Vanderbilts' principal property consists of the New York Central Railroad system.

But I should just like to take him round in this little old metropolis awhile, and show him 'Every Other Week' on the centre tables of the millionaires the Vanderbilts and the Astors and in the homes of culture and refinement everywhere, and let him judge for himself.

Coleridge Have an aim in life, or your energies will all be wasted. M. C. Peters Every one should take the helm of his own life, and steer instead of drifting. C. C. Everett Ambition is to life just what steam is to the locomotive. J. C. Jaynes

For almost a thousand years, unless a radical change of conditions comes, the Vanderbilts will draw a princely revenue from the ownership of this franchise alone.

No one knows or can ascertain the exact profits of the Vanderbilts and of other railroad owners from their control of both the anthracite, and largely the bituminous, coal mines. As has been noted, the railroad magnates cloud their trail by operating through subsidiary companies. That their extortions reach hundreds of millions of dollars every year is a patent enough fact.
