There is patient perseverance at unrecompensed, unrecorded, and unnoticed work. 'Great' and 'small' have nothing to do with the work of Christian people. It does not matter who knows our work or who does not know it, the thing is that He knows it. Now the most of us have to do absolutely unnoticed Christian service.
Still bewildered, Mina began, all the same, to assimilate this atmosphere of contentment and congratulation. "Do you really think I I had anything to do with it?" she asked, a new pride swelling in her heart. "Yes, yes, you attracted his attention." "He was amused at you, my dear." "Then I'm glad." Throughout all these experiences we have enlarged our freedom, we have strengthened our independence. We have been, and propose to be, more and more American.
In him all men could see, whatever their opinions and however little they liked him, the simplicity and the truth of a self-denying life of suffering for he was never well of zealous hard work, unstinted, unrecompensed; of unabated lofty hopes for the great interests of the Church and the University; of deep unpretending matter-of-course godliness and goodness without "form or comeliness" to attract any but those who cared for them, for themselves alone.
Because we believe that God is all love and tenderness and justice? because we cannot think He would have created life only to end in death? because we are sure that He allows nothing to be wasted, not even a thought? and nothing to go unrecompensed, either in good or in evil? Surely these are not barbarous beliefs?" A curious look came over her face.
If Joseph Duncombe doted on this bright-haired, blue-eyed daughter, his love was not unrecompensed. Rosamond idolized her father, whom she believed to be the best and noblest of created beings. Rosamond's remembrance of her mother was but shadowy. She had lost that tender protector at a very early age.
