Abu'lfida, Africanus, and other writers, Arabic and otherwise, mention Christianity as prevailing here, and Theodoret, writing in the beginning of the fifth century, speaks of the great missionary Theophilus as coming from the island of Diu to teach Christianity in India. Cosmas Indicopleustes calls the island Dioscorides.
Not masters of families: for all families are not in the Church, pagan families are without. I.; see also Part 2, chap. Hereunto also the judgment of antiquity evidently subscribeth, accounting a bishop and a presbyter to be one and the same officer in the church; as appears particularly in Ambrose, Theodoret, Hierom, and others.
Besides the authors whom I have mentioned, this history is attested by S. Ambrose, S. Chrysostom, and S. Cyril of Jerusalem. This great bishop and Eusebius lived at the time when the event is said to have happened: the other writers lived not long after, and Ruffinus and Theodoret passed part of their lives in Syria.
James the mountain hermit, round which the emigrants chanted, says Theodoret, hymns of regret and praise, "for, had he been alive, that city would have never passed into barbarian hands."
But far superior to these are their tragedies and tragi-comedies, The Maid's Tragedy, Philaster, A King and No King all written jointly and Valentinian and Thierry and Theodoret, written by Fletcher alone, but perhaps, in part, sketched out by Beaumont.
It is a free city and unfriendly to Theodoret. If I survive I will come presently and fight with you for Melicent." "I shall do nothing of the sort," Demetrios equably returned. "Am I the person to permit the man whom I most hate you who have struck me and yet live! to fight alone against some twenty adversaries! Oh, no, I shall remain, since after all, there are only twenty."
Yet ask now what you will, short of my crown, and it is yours." The old man kissed the chief of all his treasures, a bit of the True Cross, which hung upon his breast supported by a chain of gold. "The King has spoken," Perion returned. "I ask the life of Demetrios." Theodoret recoiled, like a small flame which is fluttered by its kindler's breath.
They might surely study other works too, ancient and modern, written whether by ecclesiastics or laymen, which, although they do contain theology, nevertheless, in their structure and drift, are polemical. Such is Origen’s great work against Celsus; and Tertullian’s Apology; such some of the controversial treatises of Eusebius and Theodoret; or St.
Some of the instances of this self-invented misery which are recorded, even as early as the time of Theodoret, bishop of Cyra, in the middle of the fifth century, make us wonder at the puzzling inconsistencies of the human mind. Did these poor creatures really believe that God could be propitiated by the torture of his own creatures?
"Yes, these Easterlings are quite notorious pagans, and King Theodoret has at least the grace to call himself a Christian, and, besides, it will give me a chance to get your rooms turned out and thoroughly cleaned." So Manuel, as was his custom, did what Niafer thought best.
