I thought I might get a chance of escape, as I saw none at Haase's. To my surprise, Haase, who was sitting at the table, rather fancied the idea and said I could go if I paid him half my wages: I was getting nothing at the beer-cellar. "So I was taken on at Steglitz, sleeping at Haase's and helping in the beer-cellar in the evenings.
At Steglitz, a southwest suburb, may be seen the mulberry plantation and the one silk manufactory of Berlin.
"The decisive moment is at hand! Now I hope to attain my object!" He rang the bell violently. "Have my carriage brought to the front door in half an hour," he said to Conrad, as soon as he entered the room. "But my own horses are tired. Send for four post-horses. A courier is immediately to set out for Potsdam, and see to it that relay horses be in readiness for me at Steglitz and Zehlendorf!"
"Where did the Dutchman's packet of stuff come from?" I asked. "From the Berlin Metal Works in Steglitz, a suburb of Berlin: he has dealt with them for years." "But then what does all the rest of it mean ... all this about Achilles and the rest?" "Ah, Desmond!" was Dicky's reply, "that's where you've got not only me, but also Mynheer van Urutius." In 1882, after about a year of study in Munich, he painted the important frescoes for the Steglitz Villa, in which the influence of Boecklin played freely. His Judgment of Paris revealed the fact that the young painter had come into possession of himself, and could be depended upon for qualities demanding constraint and a measure of severity. In choosing a legend of antiquity for the subject of his picture, he may have felt a psychological obligation to obey the greater influences of the antique tradition. At all events he rather suddenly developed a style of great maturity and firmness. From Paris he went back to Berlin, but in 1889 he started for Rome, where he spent four profitable years. The fruit of this Roman period has continued to ripen up to the present time, although since 1893 Klinger has made his home in Leipzig, his wanderjahre apparently over and done with. He not only painted in Rome a Piet
"I was rather friendly with a chap that frequented Haase's, a man employed in the packing department at the Metal Works at Steglitz. He was telling us one night how short-handed they were and what good money packers were earning. I was sick of being cooped up in that stinking cellar, so, more by way of a joke than anything else, I offered to come and lend a hand in the packing department.
