As the Southern leaders of an earlier day had strenuously endeavored to maintain equality of membership in the Senate, so now their successors promised to themselves such solidification of their electoral vote, as would by its very force attract sufficient strength in the North to restore the South to a position of command in the National Government.

Several of the differentiations due to the gradual cooling of the Earth have been already noticed as the formation of a crust, the solidification of sublimed elements, the precipitation of water, etc., and we here again refer to them merely to point out that they are simultaneous effects of the one cause, diminishing heat.

To the extension and solidification of her empire in the East, Great Britain now devoted herself, and with encouraging results.

"So long as the United States neither declares war nor establishes peace, it affords the Confederate States the advantage of both positions, and enables them to make all necessary arrangements for public defense and the solidification of government more safely, cheaply, and expeditiously than if the attitude of the United States was more definite and decided."

One is to stir or whip the fresh blood rapidly with a bundle of fine twigs. When this is done, the fibrin the part of the blood that causes solidification adheres to the twigs, and the blood that remains, though it is unchanged in appearance, will remain liquid for an indefinite time.

At all events, under cover of the hue and cry thus raised, the Southern leaders hurried up their work of Southern solidification, by multiplied outrages on the "Mississippi plan," so that, by 1880, they were ready to dictate, and did dictate, the Democratic Presidential nominations.

To-day the one nest which had withstood a year's buffeting was demolished offhand, and twenty-two are now being built with frantic haste. Dec. 12. To the solidification of the joy of the Isle no less than four new colonies are being established close at hand, the very tree which was raided years ago being again occupied by a jubilant and clamorous crowd.

A few geologists have indeed endeavoured to shew that the absence of organic remains is no proof of the globe having been then unfruitful or uninhabited, as the heat to which these rocks have been subjected at the time of their solidification, might have obliterated any remains of either plants or animals which were included in them.

The base of some of the dunes in the Delta of the Nile is reached by the river during the annual inundation, and the infiltration of the water, which contains lime, has converted the lower strata into a silicious limestone, or rather a calcarous sandstone, and thus afforded an opportunity of studying the structure of that rock in a locality where its origin and mode of aggregation and solidification are known.

Liquefied nitrogen, when allowed to evaporate under a pressure of sixty millimeters of mercury, gave a temperature of -214 deg. C., only the surface of the liquid gas became opaque from incipient solidification. Under lower pressures the nitrogen solidified, and temperatures as low as -225 deg. C. were recorded by the hydrogen thermometer.
