Society is all askew and, then, we have degraded women. So they are often well-nigh unfit for loving as men are often as unfit themselves. Physically unfit for motherhood, mentally unfit to cherish the monogamic idea that once was sacred with our people, sexually unfit to rouse true sex-passion such women are being bred by the million in crowded cities and by degenerate country life.
Elements of greatness it has; a fine motive, too; to display the impossibilities for evolution on the part of an aspiring soul hampered by circumstances and weak where most humanity is Weak, in the exercise of sex-passion.
Returning to a consideration of the subjects which head this chapter, we find it necessary to clear the ground a little, in regard to a definition of words. The word continence should apply to the act of self-restraint in the matter of the emotions, desires, and passions, whether of the sex-passion or the passion of anger, avarice, or gluttony.
Considering how large a part the sex-passion plays in the lives of most men and women; considering how it permeates the literature and art of the World and is as the basis of the home the most potent factor in social life, its profanation is a terrible loss, and the habit of mind which such profanation engenders cannot fail to weaken the whole spirit of reverence.
"We call by the name of lust," he declares in his MSS., "the most simple and natural desires. We might as well term hunger and thirst 'lust' as so call sex-passion, when expressing simply Nature's prompting. We miscall it 'lust, cruelly libelling those to whom we ascribe it, and introduce absolute disorder.
And it is natural to add, while thinking of Hardy's women, that, unlike almost all the Victorian novelists, he has insisted frankly, but in the main without offense, on woman's involvement with sex-passion; he finds that love, in a Wessex setting, has wider range than has been awarded it in previous study of sex relations.
If this is done, the chances are many to one that, as times goes on, the parties will grow more and more alike the strong becoming more docile and the weaker one more robust. Take time, love each other, court and be courted, and only the best results trill come of it all. Now there are some women who are called "anesthetic," that is, they have no sex-passion, though the sex parts may be normal.
But there is no synthetic love between men and women, there is only passion, and passion is fundamental hatred, the act of love is a fight. The child, the outcome, is divine. Here the union, the oneness, is manifest. Though spirit strove with spirit, in mortal conflict, during the sex-passion, yet the flesh united with flesh in oneness. The phallus is still divine.
So, in studying to obtain a knowledge of sex organs and sex functions, in the human family, the reader should not try to divest himself or herself of all sex-passion and desire; but, on the contrary, to make these of a sort of which he or she can be proud, rather than ashamed of, rejoice in, rather than suffer from.
