Thus equipped, I started for Washington on the first day of 1856, being then three months over fifteen. As I think now of my age, and more than usual diffidence, and of my omission, to win the favor of a politician who had constituents to reward, whereas to all my family practical politics were as foreign as Sanskrit, I know not whether the situation were more comical or pathetic.

It had such a powerful influence that it was called an intelligence-creating, or as we say, an epoch-making book. This Ku-sha shastra, from the Sanskrit kosa, a store, is eclectic, and contains nine chapters embodying the views of one of the schools, with selections from those of others. After long study they returned, bringing the Chinese translation of this shastra into Japan.

Next, and again before the history of our islands begins, an immigration of Celts took place, a people belonging unlike the earlier race of whom I have spoken to the same Indo-European family of nations to which the Latins, and the Teutons, and the Greeks, and the speakers of Sanskrit, belonged.

The Saxon words grow obsolete; French ones come pouring in. And Americans are even more prone to Latinisms than Englishmen are: they 'locate' at such and such a place, where an English man would just go and live there. Before Latin, Celtic was the language of Britain. Finally, says W.Q. Judge, Sanskrit will become the universal language.

It always happens, when something important is unexpectedly added to our knowledge of the past, that somebody will blindly disbelieve. Dugald Stewart could see nothing butfrauds of arch-forgersin what was added to our knowledge of ancient India when the Sanskrit language and literature were discovered.

Pali is a sonorous and harmonious language which avoids combinations of consonants and several difficult sounds found in Sanskrit. Its excellence lies chiefly in its vocabulary and its weakness in its syntax. Its inflexions are heavy and monotonous and the sentences lack concentration and variety.

Burleson seems to be of the opinion that a majority of the Baylorian managers were educated in a mule-pen and dismissed without a diploma couldn't tell whether a man were construing Catullus into Sanskrit or pronouncing in Piute a panegeric on a baked pup.

Mr. Max Muller, they represent an early stage in language 'In savage languages we see what we can no longer expect to see even in the most ancient Sanskrit or Hebrew. Now, if the tongues spoken by modern savages represent the 'childhood' and 'childish pranks' of language, why should the beliefs of modern savages not represent the childhood and childish pranks of religion?

"Talking about India and Sanskrit?" said Glyn. "Oh yes; he asked me all sorts of questions about Dour, and he asked me if I had ever seen Sanskrit letters." "Well?" "And I told him I had, and he shook his head and asked me where I had seen them." "Well, what did you say?" "That I had got some precious stones in my box with some Sanskrit letters cut in."

It is well we should have many specialists among us who understand them, just as it is well we should have specialists in Anglo-Saxon and Sanskrit. I merely mean that they are not the sum and substance of educational method. They are at best but two languages of considerable importance to the student of purely human evolution.
