The trouble with Rothe in his treatment of this Matter is, that he considers the duty of truthfulness merely in its personal and social aspects, without any direct reference to the nature, and the declared will, of God. Moreover, his peculiar definition of a lie is adapted to his view of the necessities of the case.

But Rothe goes even farther than this in the advocacy of such violations, or abrogations, of the law of veracity, as would undermine the very foundations of social life, and as would render the law against falsehood little more than a variable personal rule for limited and selected applications, after the fashion of the American humorist who "believed in universal salvation if he could pick his men."

In fact, the service of the Grand Master of France was directed by the First Steward, the Count of Cosse-Brissac. There were besides four chamberlains of the House, the Count de Rothe, the Marquis of Mondragon, the Count Mesnard de Chousy, the Viscount Hocquart, and several stewards. The Grand Chamberlain of France was the Prince de Talleyrand.

The affair, indeed, was a prophecy of the greatness of his deeds in war. At this period, Rothe, a Ruthenian rover, almost destroyed our country with his rapine and cruelty.

When one was hit, another stepped quietly up to his place and went on shooting as if at target-practice, though he had no more cover than a small stone to lie behind; and this happened not once but a score of times, the officers taking an equal share in the fight with their men, who speak with pride of the gallantry shown by Captains de Rothe and Codrington, Lieutenants Webb, Pakeman, Adams, Campbell, and Richardson, and the active veteran Major Doveton, who cheered his men on after he had received two bullet wounds, one of which shattered his fore-arm and shoulder.

Then Borgar, who could not bear to see his countrymen perishing any longer, encountered Rothe. Together they fought and together they perished. It is said that in this battle Halfdan was sorely stricken, and was for some time feeble with the wounds he had received.

It is appalling to find a man like Rothe announcing a principle like this as operative in social ethics!

Fielding announced that he had a man coming over with a motor car from Norwich for them to try, and begged to be excused. So we had to go without them. "Von Rothe was staying with me, as you know, and just before we started he had a telegram that a messenger from the Embassy was on his way down.

But by every lie of exigency the command is broken, 'Thou shalt not bear false witness." Martensen protests against the claim of Rothe that a falsehood spoken in love "is not at all to be called a lie, but can be absolutely defended as morally normal, and so in no respect needs pardon."

"It is not crossable, your Majesty; one has to go round quite westward by the Dam." "What, from Rothe Vorwerk to Big Hollow, no passage, say you; no crossing?" "None, your Majesty," insists the Peasant; who is not aware that the Russians have made one of firm trestles and logs, and use it daily for highway there; an error of some interest to Friedrich within the next twenty-four hours!
