The staccato of the orchestra of the looms sounded more loudly and provided entrance music. Astonishment rendered Mac Tavish hors de combat. He dropped his weights and his lower jaw sagged. It was the Morrison breaking the ancient rule of St. Ronan's ten minutes ahead of time! All the Morrisons were upstickit chiels in point of height.

Cadell has an interest in some of the Novels, amounting to one-half; but the following are entirely my own, viz.: St. Ronan's Well, 3 vols. Tales of Crusaders, 4 " First Chronicles, 2 " Anne of Geierstein, 3 " Redgauntlet, 3 " Woodstock, 3 " Second Chronicles, 3 " Count Robert, 3 " In all, twenty-four volumes, which will begin printing after Quentin Durward, and concludes the year 1831.

"That's the talk, Captain Sweetsir! Attend honestly to whatever job you're on! It's my own motto." "I try to do it, Mr. Morrison. You have always set me the example!" Mac Tavish groaned. He saw mill discipline going into the garbage along with everything else that had been sane and sensible and regular at St. Ronan's.

Ronan's Well, and Redgauntlet were written and published in the closest succession.

This new adjustment and touch produced in Scott's case what we call the Historical Novel. It is quite a mistake to think that he was limited to this. Guy Mannering and The Antiquary among the earlier novels, St. Ronan's Well and the exquisite introductory sketch to the Chronicles of the Canongate among the later, would disprove that.

If I have the command of a new Edition and put it into an attractive shape, with notes, introductions, and illustrations that no one save I myself can give, I am confident it will bring home the whole purchase-money with something over, and lead to the disposal of a series of the subsequent volumes of the following works, St. Ronan's Well, 3 vols.

Ronan's Well, Kenilworth, and The Heart of Midlothian have gone up in the scale; perhaps Ivanhoe and Anne of Geierstein have gone a trifle down; Diana Vernon has been added to my admirations in that enchanted world of Rob Roy; I think more of the letters in Redgauntlet, and Peter Peebles, that dreadful piece of realism, I can now read about with equanimity, interest, and I had almost said pleasure, while to the childish critic he often caused unmixed distress.

See p. 103, February 3. 1826. See Midsummer Night's Dream; a parody on Helena's "O weary night O long and tedious night." John James Audubon was born in Louisiana in the United States in 1780, but educated in France. Buchanan's Life of Audubon, p. 4. Written by Mrs. Ronan's Well.

Ronan's mill he mingled with men in his shirtsleeves. He turned and saw Nicolai Krylovensky in the chair where Lanigan had thrust him. There was no other chair on the platform. Stewart hastily laid the coat across the alien's knees. "Keep 'em out of the dirt for me, will you, brother? I'm notional about good cloth!"

Ronan's Well" and "Redgauntlet;" and in 1825, two more Tales of the Crusaders, "The Betrothed" and "The Talisman," the latter probably sharing with "Ivanhoe" the greatest popularity.
