"Bear it for William's sake," said the Dean, softly, "and, meanwhile take my advice and don't read any more Renan!" Kitty looked at him curiously. "I prefer to see things as they are." The Dean sighed. "That none of us can do, my dear Lady Kitty. No one can satisfy his intelligence. But religion speaks to the will and it is the only thing between us and the void. Don't tamper with it!

It is as obvious and natural in our days to dispose of such difficulties in this way with a smile and a sneer as it was in the first century with a shout "Christiani ad leones." But Corneille was as good a judge of the human heart as M. Renan. He had gauged the powers of faith and conviction; he certainly would have expected to find his Polyeucte more obstinate.

Upon a certain occasion I voted against him in favour of some one who had been very ill-natured towards me, and he said to me afterwards: "Renan, I shall play some mean trick upon you; out of impartiality you will vote for me." While I have been very fond of my friends, I have done very little for them. I have been as much at the disposal of the public as of them.

I thought, as we walked away, of the summer light fading from the childish picture, painted probably not long before the entry of the Italian troops into Rome, and of all that was symbolized by it and the deserted villa, to which the "prisoner of the Vatican" no longer returns. But at least Rome had given Ernest Renan no mean place among her enemies Arius, Luther, Voltaire Renan!

Indeed M. Renan himself has expatiated on the charm of seeing figures of the ideal in the cottages of the poor, images representing no reality, and so forth.

M. Renan shrinks from solving such a question by the hypothesis of conscious fraud. To solve it by sentiment is hardly more respectful either to the world or to truth. We have left ourselves no room to speak of the best part of M. Renan's new volume, his historical comment on the first period of Christianity.

There is a technical term that I cannot recall at this moment, not if you beat me a hundred times over. Delarus-Mardrus. An interpretation which would enchant Girard and Renan. There is more still.... And notice, please, that I have not at my disposition on the otherwise commodious hump of this mehari, either the great dictionary of Estienne or the lexicons of Passow, of Pape, or of Liddel-Scott.

The experience of Renan, who toward the end of his life set down in his remarkable drama L'Abbesse de Jouarre, his conviction that, even from the point of view of chastity, love is, after all, the supreme thing in the world, is far from standing alone.

January, 1870. Saint-Paul, par Ernest Renan. Paris, 1869. Histoire du Dogme de la Divinite de Jesus-Christ, par Albert Reville. Paris, 1869. The End of the World and the Day of Judgment. Two Discourses by the Rev. W. R. Alger. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1870.

The state, he said, is the machine of Progress, and the Socialists are right in formulating the problem which man has to solve, though their solution is a bad one. For individual liberty, which socialism would seriously limit, is a definite conquest, and ought to be preserved inviolate. Renan wrote this work in 1848 and 1849, but did not publish it at the time.
