Sometimes the same thing is knowingly done, for the purpose of showing the falsity of the assumption; which is called a reductio ad absurdum.

'A dead level of abject pauperism, put in Herbert blandly; 'a reductio ad absurdum of all your visionary Schurzian philosophy, my dear Ernest. Look at it another way, now, and just consider. Which really and truly matters most to you and me, a great work of art or a highly respectable horny-handed son of toil, whose acquaintance we have never had the pleasure of personally making?

Nevertheless, I begin my suit here and now, and I shall never withdraw it till you are engaged to another fellow. So there!" Carrie looked rather blank at this result of her reductio ad absurdum process; and he did not help her by adding, "A fellow isn't always in love.

Their letters and prefaces sounded like a satire upon his own attitude, a reductio ad absurdum of his claims to "genius". Here, for instance, was a man who wrote to introduce himself as America's first epic poet stating incidentally that he was an inspector of gas-meters, and had a wife and six children.

His pictures look like a visible reductio ad absurdum of it all. That is how men look, he seems to say, when they are fighting in modern war; and, being men, they ought not to look so. That, at least, is the effect the pictures produce on us. They are a bitter satire on all the modern power of man and the uses to which he has put it.

These peculiar associations are no doubt what is chiefly enjoyed in music, antecedent to a properly musical culture.

Which is a complete reductio ad absurdum of the philosophic opinion. Some of the cerauniæ, says Pliny, are like hatchets. He would have been nearer the mark if he had said 'are hatchets' outright.

Therefore, it will not be successful in cities of four hundred thousand or larger, which is a reductio ad absurdum. The folly of the attempt is shown by the very statement of the conclusion. The Dilemma. One special form of the syllogism is at times so strong an argument that it deserves special mention here, namely, the dilemma.

But then our body, as a part of this external world, would be the work of our organs! But then our organs themselves would be the work of our organs! It seems to me that this is a complete REDUCTIO AD ABSURDUM, if the conception CAUSA SUI is something fundamentally absurd. Consequently, the external world is NOT the work of our organs ?

The conception lands us in a reductio ad absurdum. Therefore, we are free to use our powers of Personality as we will, only we must take the consequences. Now one error we are all very apt to fall into, is the mistaken use of the Will.
