It was in London, and chiefly by means of the stage, that a thorough amalgamation of the Saxon, Norman, and scholarly elements of English was brought about. Already, Puttenham, in his "Arte of English Poesy," declares that the practice of the capital and the country within sixty miles of it was the standard of correct diction, the jus et norma loquendi.

Like Webbe, the author of The Arte of English Poesie ascribed to Puttenham, believes much in the pleasure of poetry. He does not, however, advance pleasure as the purpose any more than he does profit.

For instance in his preface to his second instalment of Homer entitled Achilles' Shield Chapman dwells at length on the moral value and wisdom contained in the Iliad, and enunciates the same idea in his Prefaces of 1610-16. Peacham, in his Compleat Gentleman , repeats the usual commonplaces to the effect that poetry is a dulcet philosophy, for the most part lifted from Puttenham.

The general domestic fool, termed often, but improperly, a Clown; described by Puttenham as "a buffoune, or counterfett foole." The Clown, who was a mere country booby, or a witty rustic. The female fool, who was generally an idiot. The city or corporation fool, an assistant in public entertainments. The tavern fool, retained to amuse the customers.

But by the end of the sixteenth century, as by the end of the nineteenth, there was a moving of the waters: the Renascence of ancient learning had itself brought into English use thousands of learned words, from Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and other languages, 'ink-horn terms, as they were called by Bale and by Puttenham, unknown to, and not to be imbibed from, mother or grandmother.
