The six following poesies are selected from this series, as they are good examples of the average inspirations of ring-poets: “Seithe God hath wrought this choice in thee, So frame thyselfe to comfourth mee.” “United hearts death only parts.” “Let us share in joy and care.” “A faithfull wife preserveth life.” “As God decreed, so we agreed.” “Love and live happily.”
If that thing be a good medicine that restoreth us our health when we lose it, as good a medicine must this one be that preserveth our health while we have it, and suffereth us not to fall into that painful sickness that must afterward drive us to a painful remedy!
It was a neat little book, with gilt edges; no name in it; and having its pages numbered for the days of the year. And each page was full of Bible words. It looked nice. I put the book in my pocket; and on board the ferryboat opened it again, and looked for the date of the day in March where we were. I found the words "He preserveth the way of His saints." They were the words heading the page.
Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful. The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me. Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee. For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.
Sultan Gagar Alum the great and noble King, whose extensive power reacheth unto the limits of the wide ocean; unto whom God grants whatever he desires, and over whom no evil spirit, nor even Satan himself has any influence; who is invested with an authority to punish evil-doers; and has the most tender heart in the support of the innocent; has no malice in his mind, but preserveth the righteous with the greatest reverence, and nourisheth the poor and needy, feeding them daily from his own table.
"The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell got hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. "Then called I upon the name of the Lord; O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul. "The Lord preserveth the simple: I was brought low and he HELPED me. "Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.
"Many an Irish captain keepeth and preserveth the king's subjects in peace without hurt of their enemies; inasmuch as some of those hath tribute yearly of English men ... not to the intent that they should escape harmless; but to the intent to devour them, as the greedy hound delivereth the sheep from the wolf." State Papers, Vol. II. pp. 16, 17.
God, however, aided Him with the hosts of the unseen, and protected Him with truth, and sent Him down unto another land, according to His promise. He, verily, ordaineth what He pleaseth. Thy Lord truly preserveth whom He willeth, be he in the midst of the seas, or in the maw of the serpent, or beneath the sword of the oppressor.
In a word, matrimony not only preserveth human generations so that the same remain continually, but it preserveth the generations human. Ib. p. 450. In the synod at Leipzig the lawyers concluded that secret contractors should be punished with banishment and be disinherited.
In all things, and in the least creatures, yea, also in their members, God's almighty power and great wonderful works do clearly shine. For what man, how powerful, wise, and holy soever, can make out of one fig, a fig-tree or another fig? or, out of one cherry- stone, can make a cherry or a cherry-tree? or what man can know how God createth and preserveth all things and maketh them grow?
