He would more likely have killed the mule, and dragged its body off with him across the river, or perhaps have broken into the house, and done worse. The animal was, no doubt, the "ocelot," which is also spotted, or rather marked with the eye-like rosettes which distinguish the skin of the jaguar.
Jack calculated that the time it lost in getting down to the ground again, would enable him to meantime put a considerable distance between himself and the enemy. The lad sat astride the dead tree branch and began to walk himself outward from the main trunk of the tree. The ocelot reached the crotch, surveyed Jack with a savage growl, and carefully planting its feet, started out after him.
As the ocelot thrust out one formidable paw to tear its victim into its clasp, Jack flung the contents of the pepper bottle squarely into its eyes. In fact, he saw the white splinters show where it joined the tree.
