An Article is a non-significant sound marking the beginning, end, or dividing-point of a Speech, its natural place being either at the extremities or in the middle. A Noun or name is a composite significant sound not involving the idea of time, with parts which have no significance by themselves in it.

It would be a wonderful advantage if every scientific specialist would make out a list of the non-significant properties that he recognises in matter.

By talking to us skilfully about the many things that do not matter, she suggests to us, inversely and with unobtrusive irony, the few things that really do. Her very message, therefore, is immediately dependent upon her faultless art. If she had done her work less well, the result would have been non-significant and wearisome.

Linguistic categories make up a system of surviving dogma dogma of the unconscious. They are often but half real as concepts; their life tends ever to languish away into form for form's sake. There is still a third cause for the rise of this non-significant form, or rather of non-significant differences of form.

Luther says somewhere, 'Do not anxiously search for the pillars which are to keep the sky from falling. Many of us have been afraid all our lives that the sky would fall, and have anxiously searched for the pillars. There are none, and yet the sky will not fall. Idolatry is the worship of that which is non-significant. The worship of one God, as Coleridge says, may be idolatry.

You remember the Apostle Paul's frequent use of the metaphor of 'putting off the old man, putting on the new. You remember, finally, the visions of the last days, in which the Seer in Patmos saw the armies in heaven that followed their victorious Commander, 'clothed in fine linen, white and pure, which is the righteousness of the saints. If we put all these together, surely I am not forcing a meaning on a non-significant detail, when I say that here we have shadowed for us the great thought, that the result of the divine forgiveness coming upon a man is that he is clothed with a character which fits him to sit down at his Father's table.

'He was constrained by the word, testifying. Now I do not know whether it is imposing too much meaning upon a non-significant difference of expression, if I ask you to note the difference between that phrase and the one which describes his previous activity: 'He reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade' the Jews and the Greeks, but when the old impulse came back in new force, reasoning was far too cold a method, and Paul took to testifying.

A Syllable is a non-significant sound, composed of a mute and a vowel: for GR without A is a syllable, as also with A, GRA. But the investigation of these differences belongs also to metrical science. A Connecting word is a non-significant sound, which neither causes nor hinders the union of many sounds into one significant sound; it may be placed at either end or in the middle of a sentence.
