If the Fichtean Science of Knowledge could be separated from its difficult method, which it is impossible ever to make comprehensible to the unphilosophical mind, it would be called to take the place of religion. The journals Im Neuen Reich, 1881, No. 24, and Die Gegenwart, 1882, No. 34, contained warmly written notices of Fortlage by J. Volkelt.

Two very interesting letters from the master in this connection were published some years ago in the Neuen Freien Presse of Vienna, and are included in Herr Kalischer's Beethovenbriefe published in Berlin in 1902. The following one shows Beethoven's ethical character in strong light: To the Magistrate Czapka: DEAR SIR: Hofrath von Breuning and I have carefully considered what is best to be done.

In 1769, the shrewd publisher began to issue a new and slightly altered edition of the translation, which bore, however, on the title pagenach einer neuen Uebersetzungand the imprint, Berlin und Stralsund bey Gottlieb August Langen, Parts I and II being dated 1769; Parts III and IV, 1770; Parts V, VI, VII and VIII, 1771; Part IX, 1772.

These are his mild-toned Sermon von dem hochwürdigen Sacrament, etc., of 1519; the present Sermon von dem neuen Testament, etc., of Aug., 1520; the Babylonian Captivity of the Church, of Oct., 1520; the strongly polemical tract On the Abuse of the Mass, 1522. We shall have occasion to refer to some interesting points of comparison among these works.

Before very long these great personages took themselves off "zum neuen taten."

Paris, 1801. 3 vols. 8vo. This work, translated from the Dutch, is full of curious matter, not only respecting the fish and fisheries of the North Sea, but also respecting Greenland, Spitzbergen, Nova Zembla, and on subjects of natural history. Beschriebung des Alten und Neuen Grenland, nebist einem begrift der Reisen die Frobisher, &c. Nuremberg, 1679. 4to. A Voyage towards the North Pole.

It was in the first reaction from this dimly felt loss that he lit one day on a volume which Alfieri had smuggled into the Academy the Lettres Philosophiques of Francois Arouet de Voltaire. Zu neuen Ufern lockt ein neuer Tag.

He considers the doctrine of the indestructibility of the monad to be that belief in the immortality of the soul which was professed by the Druids, the Egyptians, the Brahmins, and the Buddhists, the belief of Pythagoras and Plato, of Plotinus, of Lessing, and of Goethe, in unison with the evolution of Darwin and Haeckel.* * Landseck, Bruno der Martyrer der neuen Weltanschauung, p. 37.

I have to thank fate, however, that a fine epigram of A.B. Schlegel, which has since been my guiding star, came before my notice as a youth: "Leset fleizig die Alten, die wahren eigentlich Alten Was die Neuen davon sagen bedeutet nicht viel." Oh, how like one commonplace mind is to another! How they are all fashioned in one form!

While working on the Mass in D, he had in mind composing another mass, as is evidenced by the following memorandum in the sketches of the Agnus Dei: "Das Kyrie in der neuen Messe bloss mit blasenden Instrumenten und Orgel." A memorandum on the subject of the Tenth Symphony appears in the sketch-books of the latter part of the year 1818.
