Of the reading of Holy Scriptures It is Truth which we must look for in Holy Writ, not cunning of words. All Scripture ought to be read in the spirit in which it was written. We must rather seek for what is profitable in Scripture, than for what ministereth to subtlety in discourse. Therefore we ought to read books which are devotional and simple, as well as those which are deep and difficult.
The boys take all after their father, and covet to tread in his steps; yea, if they do but see any place where the old Pilgrim hath lain, or any print of his foot, it ministereth joy to their hearts, and they covet to lie or tread in the same. GAIUS. Then said Gaius, Is this Christian's wife? and are these Christian's children? I knew your husband's father, yea, also his father's father.
SECOND. OF MAN'S CARRIAGE TO GOD. Let us come now to the carriage of these sinners to God, and that from the first day he beginneth to deal with their souls, even to the time that they are to be taken up into heaven. And, First. To begin with God's ordinary dealing with sinners, when at first he ministereth conviction to them by his Word, how strangely do they behave themselves!
Remember how Peter puts in one category these two forms of service, as equally flowing from 'the manifold grace of God, and equally to be exercised as 'good stewards' thereof 'If any man speaketh, speaking as it were the oracles of God; if any man ministereth, ministering as of the strength which God supplieth. Remember how Paul classes all varieties of service as equally 'gifts according to the grace given to us, and to be exercised in the same spirit whatever are the difference in their forms: 'or ministry, let us give ourselves to our ministry; or he that teacheth, to his teaching: he that giveth, let him do it with liberality ... he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
And again, "I had not known lust, unless the law had said, Thou shalt not covet;" Rom. vii. 7. This law, now when it effectually ministereth conviction of sin to the conscience, doth it by putting of life, and strength, and terror into sin. By its working on the conscience, it makes sin revive, "and the strength of sin is the law;" Rom. vii.; 1 Cor. xv.
And the mighty Vibhatsu of immeasurable soul and possessing great strength, showeth mercy and extendeth protection even to a foe when fallen. And he is the refuge of us all and he crusheth his foes in fight. And he hath the power to collect any treasure whatever, and he ministereth unto our happiness.
He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? This argument based on the experience of the Galatians, pleased the Apostle so well that he returns to it after he had warned them against their twofold danger.
Would everyone even of thy half-created race reason with himself and say: Truly it is in the night, and no one can see who it is that ministereth; the sounds alone will go forth nor bear my image; I shall reap no honour; I will not rise and go?
And he saith again, "Little children, let no man deceive you, he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous." And for this, this scripture, ministereth to us two things to be considered by us. The first is, that he that doeth righteousness is righteous. The second is, that he that doeth righteousness is righteous, as Christ is righteous.
He therefore who ministereth to you a supply of the Spirit, and powerfully worketh miracles among you, doth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of the faith? as Abraham believed in God, and it was imputed to him for righteousness. Know then that they who are of faith, these are the children of Abraham.
