Colombo has been called the Clapham Junction of the East, for there steamship lines from Australia, China, Burmah, and the Dutch East Indies all meet, and the most unexpected friends turn up. I recall one arrival at Colombo in a Messageries Maritimes boat. On board was a most agreeable French lady going out with her children to join her husband, a French officer in Cochin China.
If the municipal authorities have set themselves the task of putting down mendicity, they have succeeded. French enterprise, French capital is enriching the population from one end of the Alpes Maritimes to the other. At the present time there must be tens of thousands of workmen employed in the building of hotels and villas between Marseilles and Ventimille.
There were at that time, according to rumour, no fewer than four yachts in the Pacific; but it was strange that any two of them should thus lie side by side in that outlandish inlet: stranger still that in the owner of the Nyanza, Captain Dewar, I should find a man of the same country and the same county with myself, and one whom I had seen walking as a boy on the shores of the Alpes Maritimes.
Funds managed by the government for making loans and supporting charitable enterprises. Tr. The names are fictitious burlesques. Tr. "Boiled Shrimp" Tr. "Uncle Frank." Tr. Messageries Maritimes, a French line of steamers in the Oriental trade. Tr.
Forestry is studied at Nancy, husbandry in general at Rennes, Grignan, and Amiens, the culture of the vine at Montpellier, drainage and irrigation at Quimperle, all these great schools being made accessible to poorer students by means of scholarships. In no other region of France could a Horticultural College be so appropriately placed as in the department of the Alpes Maritimes.
Among the latter was an individual who is usually to be met with on the ships of the P. & O. Company and those of the Messagéries Maritimes, though more frequently on the former. L. and I christened him "The Inevitable," as a voyage to India or China can rarely be made without coming across him.
But the more he drank the less genial were the shadows, and by midnight they all had become as sinister and terrible as ever. On the way home to his room Suvaroff suddenly remembered that he had a friend who was a druggist. "Perhaps he can give me something to make me sleep," Suvaroff muttered. But the drug-store was closed. Suvaroff climbed wearily up the stairs of the Hôtel des Alpes Maritimes.
As she did so her eyes fell on a sheet of note-paper; it was clutched in John's right hand, and the encircling grasp covered it, save at the top. The top was visible, and Mary, before she knew what she was doing, had read the embossed heading nothing else, just the embossed heading Hotel de Luxe, Cannes, Alpes Maritimes.
This steamer, one of the finest of the Messageries Maritimes line, is perfect in all respects, and has a deck like that of an old-fashioned frigate. The weather has been perfect also, and the sea smooth enough for a skiff. The heat increases hourly though, or rather has increased hourly, for hotter it cannot be!
Our specimen of the genus, however, subsided soon after leaving Naples, finding all his lectures in vain, and confided to us his intention of "never coming out again by this infernal line" a consummation most devoutly to be wished for the sake of the Messagéries Maritimes.
