On page 41, speaking of the scientific work of Marx with a disdain which can not be taken seriously, since it is too much like that of the theologians for Darwin or that of the jurists for Lombroso, he reasons in this curious fashion: "Starting from the hypothesis that all private property is unjust, it is not logic that is wanting in the doctrine of Marx.

Lombroso has more especially advocated the doctrine that prostitution is the vicarious equivalent of criminality.

I was, however, on this memorable Easter Eve most happily innocent of my Lombroso and my Mantagazza, else I had not been walking home with Henrietta Manners, in all the confidence of an unsophisticated country-girl.

Wheatley, vol. vii, p. 10. Lombroso and Ferrero, La Donna Delinquente; cf. Havelock Ellis, Man and Woman, fourth edition, p. 196. Gury, Théologie Morale, art. 381. It has been set out, for instance, by Professor Wahrmund in Ehe und Eherecht, 1908.

Jew-hatred, he claims, like Lombroso in his work on anti-Semitism, is a "platonic hatred," a hereditary mental disease, which two thousand years' duration has so aggravated as to render it incurable. As the Jewish problem is international, it can be solved only by nationalism.

The individual was called "l'homme-oiseau," or the human bird, and his cranial capacity was only 390 c.c. Lombroso speaks of another individual called "l'homme-lapin," or man-rabbit, whose cranium was only slightly larger than that of the other, measuring 490 mm. in circumference. Castelli alludes to endemic microcephaly among some of the peoples of Asia.

Later, Lombroso, in a book teeming with doubtful or manifestly false evidence, finding his predecessor's theory too vague, attempts to give it more precision by substituting for neurosis in general a specific neurosis larvated epilepsy.

I am able only, however, to say with the pilot: "I sail this way," and then make head as best I may. I have no faith in the contention of the Lombrosians that genius is akin to insanity, neither do I think that genius is an infinite capacity for taking pains. Lombroso, for that matter, is as old-fashioned today as a hoop skirt. Genius partakes of the miraculous.

For a description of these sibyls with a list of the works in which they are mentioned, see: Fullom, Steven Watson. The History of Woman. Third Ed. London, 1855. Rohmer, Sax. E.P. "Did Lombroso say that?" asked Harris. "He wrote it, which is still more to the point, and it was his acceptance of the main facts of Paladino's mediumship that led other groups of scientists to take up her case.
