Where the Land of Ophir, whence this golden lady came, was really situated has evoked much controversy, but there is now a general opinion that Ophir was on the east coast of Africa, somewhere near Delagoa Bay, in the neighbourhood of the Limpopo and Sabia rivers.

There was no pause in the broken, turgid torrent, which was like a muddy flood pouring over the boulders of a rapid. "Who the traitor is? Is it the man that tries to save his homeland from the wolf and the worm? I kill Piet Graaf to save the Baas. The Baas an' I, we understand on the Limpopo we make the unie. He is the Baas, and I am his slave. All else nothing is.

So far we have traced the history of the lands into which the southward stream of invading Bantus turned, and have followed them to the Limpopo River. We turn now to the lands north from Lake Nyassa. The aboriginal Negroes sustained in prehistoric time invasions from the northeast by Negroids of a type like the ancient Egyptians and like the modern Gallas, Masai, and Somalis.

But Willem and Hans had determined upon seeking adventures farther to the north than any place they had yet visited; and hence the present expedition. The promise of sport and rare adventures, added to the fear of ridicule should they remain at home, influenced Hendrik and Arend to accompany the great hunter and the naturalist to the banks of the Limpopo.

At least I will set them down, and if in the after days anyone cares to publish them, well he is at liberty to do so. It was in the year oh! never mind the year, it was a long while ago when I was much younger, that I went on a hunting expedition to the north of the Limpopo River which borders the Transvaal. My companion was a gentleman of the name of Scroope, Charles Scroope.

See, I am but a little man, and my lot is humble at the last, yet I have brought about the death of three of them, and of these two died by my hand. It was fourteen days after the passing away of the Prince Umhlangana that the great army came back in a sorry plight from the marshes of the Limpopo, for half of them were left dead of fever and the might of the foe, and the rest were starving.

We had no intention of establishing ourselves within the limits of the Transvaal; we were going beyond the Limpopo, and consequently were simple travellers, and were not legally required to take any steps in regard to the Government, nor even to ask a passport. All this was written down and addressed to the Executive Committee, who took the matter in hand.

By the time the English came to Port Natal, Chaka was ruling over the whole southeastern seaboard, from the Limpopo River to Cape Colony, including the Orange and Transvaal states and the whole of Natal. Chaka was killed in 1828 and was eventually succeeded by his brother Dingan, who reigned twelve years.

The last ray of daylight had fled from the valley of the Limpopo, when Willem and Hendrik, provided with a torch and accompanied by the Kaffir and the dog Spoor'em, again set forth to seek for their lost companion. The animal answering to the name Spoor'em was a large Spanish bloodhound, now led forth to perform the first duty required of him in the expedition.

"He knows, too, what a sjambok's worth in Krool's eyes." When the two were left alone, Stafford slowly seated himself, and his fingers played idly with the sjambok. "You say you will do what you like, in spite of the Baas?" he asked, in a low, even tone. "If the Baas hurt me, I will hurt. If anybody hurt me, I will hurt." "You will hurt the Baas, eh? I thought he saved your life on the Limpopo."
