'Lenotchka, come here, said Anna Vassilyevna, 'look, what a charming reticule. 'I worked it myself, observed the priest's wife. Elena came away from the window. Insarov did not stay more than a quarter of an hour at the Stahovs'. Elena watched him secretly. He was restless and ill at ease. As before, he did not know where to look, and he went away strangely and suddenly; he seemed to vanish.
And as she did not regard him as a visitor, and did not consider it necessary to entertain a relation, almost one of the family, it came to pass that in less than half-an hour's time he found himself walking in an avenue in the grounds with Lisa. Lenotchka and Shurotchka were running about a few paces from them in the flower-garden. Lisa was as calm as usual but more than usually pale.
"Yes, yes, you guess why," Lavretsky cried suddenly, "in the course of this fortnight I have come to know the value of a pure woman's heart, and my past seems further from me than ever." Lisa was confused, and went gently into the flower-garden towards Lenotchka and Shurotchka.
"Yes, he is alive, and as great a liar as ever," Marya Dmitrievna's son continued; "and only fancy, yesterday this madcap" pointing to the school-girl, his wife's sister "put some pepper in his snuff-box." "How he did sneeze!" cried Lenotchka, and again there was a burst of unrestrained laughter.
Questions, exclamations, and anecdotes followed. "It's a long time since we have seen you," observed Lenotchka simply, "and Varvara Pavlovna we have seen nothing of either." "Well, no wonder!" her brother hastened to interpose. "I carried you off to Petersburg, and Fedor Ivanitch has been living all the time in the country." "Yes, and mamma died soon after then."
They surrounded Lavretsky at once; Lenotchka, as an old acquaintance, was the first to mention her own name, and assured him that in a little while she would have certainly recognised him. She presented him to the rest of the party, calling each, even her betrothed, by their pet names. They all trooped through the dining-room into the drawing-room.
'Lenotchka, he would shout to her, 'come quickly, here's a spider eating a fly; come and save the poor wretch! And Lenotchka, all excitement, would run up, set the fly free, and disentangle its legs. 'Well, now let it bite you a little, since you are so kind, her father would say ironically; but she did not hear him.
