By treating them well, Clark made them all friendly to the Americans. When the British at Vin-cennes heard that Clark had taken Kaskaskia, they thought that they would take it back again. Clark planned to land at a deserted French fort opposite the mouth of the Tennessee River, and from there to march across the country against Kaskaskia, the nearest Illinois town. At the landing place, the army was joined by a band of American hunters who had just come from the French settlements.
