Without counting the rice that gives a wonderful annual product, the Indian-corn that gives two harvests a year and the sweet potatoes that give three, there is the yam, the sikoi, the sugar-cane, coffee, pepper, tea, the banana, the ananas, indigo, sago, tapioca, gambier, various sorts of rubber, gigantic trees for shipbuilding, and so on.
By the word corn I mean oats, rye, and barley; but in the Canadas and in the United States that word means maize or Indian-corn only, which in Canada, last summer, was not, I should think, even an average crop. It is extensively used here for food, as well as buckwheat, and for feeding poultry. But to our journey westward.
The following statement will show what proportion the value of the article at the place of its growth bears to the cost of the carriage; and it shows also how enormous an effect on the price of corn in England would follow any serious decrease in the cost of carriage: A bushel of Indian-corn at Bloomington, in Illinois, cost, in October, 1861 10 cents.

Our drink was the water in the ditches, whatever might be its state; if the ditches were dry, water was brought to us by the boys.
Rats also have been imported, and appear to thrive well in the towns; though, I am happy to say, they have not found their way into my township yet and long may they be ignorant of my location. There is also another animal, which I think is more numerous than formerly I mean the black squirrel. These pretty little creatures are very destructive amongst the Indian-corn crops.
I can plant, and fish, and shoot, and make a fence from the ropes of the wreck, and have a large garden, and all that a man can want. Our own poultry, you know, has long been out; but there is still a bushel of Indian-corn left, that was intended for their feed. One quart of that, will make me a rich man, in such a climate as this, and with soil like that on the flat between the two groves.
The size of the farm must, however, depend on the resources of the emigrant, the strength and number of his family, and the quantity of acres he may possess. In the month of May the settler should spring-burn three or four acres, and log them up for his spring-crops, such as potatoes and Indian-corn.
They usually hunted three times a week, if the weather was favorable. On the hunting-mornings, breakfast was served at candlelight. Washington seldom partook of anything but Indian-corn cakes and milk.
