To judge by all this ideographic testimony, lovers in Japan or at least in Izumo are even more secretive than in our Occident. The enamoured youth never writes his own jitsumyo and his sweetheart's yobi-na together; and the family name, or myoji, he seldom ventures to inscribe.

For reasons which will be understood by and by, the application of the ideographic script to the language of Japan was a task of immense difficulty, and long years must have passed before the attainment of any degree of proficiency. This work was commenced in the year 620, but nothing is known as to the date of its completion. It represents the first Japanese history.

See e.g., Ward, Seal Cylinders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, p. 12. Ramman. These two lines are repeated. The thunderbolt. Cities sacred to thee. I.e., the sacred edifices in these cities. The lofty dwelling of the gods is here meant. See chapter xxvii. Ideographic reading the ideograph signifies 'shrine. The verbal stem barâru means 'to shine. See p. 414. See p. 525. See p. 400.

Gradually as the practice grew habitual and extensive, the most frequently repeated forms became fixed, and presently abbreviated; and, passing through the hieroglyphic and ideographic phases, the symbols lost all apparent relations to the things signified: just as the majority of our spoken words have done. Observe again, that the same thing is true respecting the genesis of reasoning.

I am not competent to judge as to the importance of the ideographic script in producing the distinctive characteristics of Chinese civilization, but I have no doubt that this importance is very great, and is more or less of the kind indicated in the above quotation.

It is generally admitted that all the literature of Babylonia, including the oldest and even that written in the "ideographic" style, whether we term it "Sumero-Akkadian" or "hieratic," is the work of the Semitic settlers of Mesopotamia.

The ideas expressed by the ideographic values of the signs give no evidence of having been produced in non-Semitic surroundings; and, whatever the origin of the system may be, it has been so shaped by the Babylonians, so thoroughly adapted to their purposes, that it is to all practical purposes Semitic.

Tattooed the length of the roseleaf sole in the graceful ideographic lettering of the islands I read "What an exquisite name!" I murmured, "and so unusual!" I was awed. I felt as if this superb creature, my mate, had revealed to me the last, the most hidden of her secrets. I had heard of Mother of Pearl, but of the Daughter never...and I was married to her!

"Mercury or quicksilver is fluid at ordinary temperatures, and that might lead us to the idea of movement animation life itself." "Having got certain fundamental ideas," I went on, "by combining these we might arrive at other distinct conceptions. We might build up an ideographic or glyphic language of signs the signs being spectra.

Written, as they usually are, in the ideographic "style," the phonetic reading can only be determined when the deity in question can be identified with one, whose name is written at some place phonetically, or when the ideographs employed are so grouped as to place the phonetic reading beyond doubt.
