BOSWELL. These two quotations are part of the same paragraph, and are not even separated by a word. Ib. p. 6. See ante, i. 453; iii. 323; iv. 276; and v. 32. Some years later he said that 'when Burke lets himself down to jocularity he is in the kennel. Ante, iv. 276. Cicero and Demosthenes, no doubt, were brought in by the passage about Nicholson.
N. B. Not every revelation requires a sensible miracle as the credential; but every revelation of a new series of 'credenda'. The prophets appealed to records of acknowledged authority, and to their obvious sense literally interpreted. The Baptist needed no miracle to attest his right of calling sinners to repentance. See 'Exodus' iv. 10. Ib. pp. 346, 7.

A public declaration that he was no longer a member of that is, of one faith with the Church. This the man himself, after two public notices, admits and involves in the very act of persisting.
