But wit ye well, inwardly, as the book saith, she took great thought, but she bare it out with a proud countenance as though she felt nothing nor danger. All only at that dinner she had Sir Gawaine and his brethren, that is for to say Sir Agravaine, Sir Gaheris, Sir Gareth, and Sir Mordred.
And therefore, said Sir Gareth to Sir Tristram, let me know this day what ye be; and wonder ye not so upon Sir Palomides, for he enforceth himself to win all the worship and honour from you. I may well believe it, said Sir Tristram. And sithen I understand his evil will and his envy, ye shall see, if that I enforce myself, that the noise shall be left that now is upon him.
My lord, said Sir Gareth, he made me a knight, and when I saw him so hard bestead, methought it was my worship to help him, for I saw him do so much, and so many noble knights against him; and when I understood that he was Sir Launcelot du Lake, I shamed to see so many knights against him alone.
When they reached the place they saw Sir Gareth and Sir Gawaine sitting on the hill-side. The King jumped off his horse, and would have greeted them, but he swooned away for gladness, and they ran and comforted him, and also their mother. The two Knights stayed in King Arthur's Court for eight days, and rested themselves and grew strong.
And now, for the first time, Gareth met his match, for the stranger knight held his seat unharmed, and wounded him in the side with his spear. Then they alighted and drew their swords, and for two hours they fought, till the blood flowed freely from them both. As they thus fought there came that way the damsel Linet, riding on an ambling mule. When she saw them, she cried,
But give it me again, I pray thee, when the tournament is done, for it greatly increaseth my beauty whensoever I wear it." "Grammercy, mine own lady," said Sir Gareth, "I wished for nothing better, for now I may be certainly disguised as long as I will."
Then she went up into a tower over the gate, with great torch-light, that she might behold the storm-stayed wayfarer. When Gareth saw the light, he cried loudly, "Whether thou be lord or lady, giant or champion, I pray for harbor this night. If it be that I must fight for my lodging, spare me that till morning, when I have rested, for I and my horse are both weary."
At this Sir Gaheris and Sir Gareth spoke to King Arthur: 'Sir, if you command us we will obey, but it will be sore against our will. And if we go we shall be dressed as men of peace, and wear no armour. 'Make yourselves ready, then, answered the King, 'for I would delay no longer in giving judgment.
My lord, said the damosel Linet, ye must of your good grace hold her excused, for she knoweth not that my lord, Sir Gareth, is here. Go then for her, said King Arthur, that we may be appointed what is best to be done, according to the pleasure of my nephew. Sir, said the damosel, that shall be done, and so she rode unto her sister.
'But Lyonors, I must see Lyonors, thought Gareth. 'Surely she will wish to see me, and he looked wistfully up to the window, and there beautiful as ever, was his Lady Lyonors. 'I cannot love you altogether, said Lyonors, 'till you have been King Arthur's knight for another year, and helped to clear the land from his enemies.
