The land on the Caura, for the most part a virgin soil, is extremely fertile. There are pasturages for more than 15,000 beasts; but the poor inhabitants have neither horses nor horned cattle. More than five-sixths of the banks of the Caura are either desert, or occupied by independent and savage tribes.

In such excursions and alarms do they pass the long night. Though five-sixths of them slept stertorously in their holes by day, by night they were as wakeful as owls, and not less predatory.

For instance, in the Franco-Prussian War, typhoid alone caused sixty per cent of all the deaths. They admit this, but say at the same time that it is possible for each one to live on five-sixths of what he produces.

That strong drink tends to produce disease is no longer questioned. "During the cholera in New York City in 1832, of two hundred and four cases in the Park Hospital only six were temperate, and all of these recovered; while one hundred and twenty-two of the others died. In Great Britain in the same year five-sixths of all who perished were intemperate.
