The Sun Inn, or "House of the Giants," as it has sometimes been called, from the colossal figures which appear in the pargeting over its gateway, is a building which evidently grew with the needs of the town, and a study of its architectural features is curiously instructive. The following extract from Pepys's Diary is interesting as referring to Saffron Walden: "1659, Feby. 27th.
Snow melting. At noon there was a sudden change of the wind to the northwest, which rose to a tempest, overturning trees and making most doleful sounds as it swept through the woods, where it broke off branches by the thousand. Became piercingly cold. Such quick changes cannot be healthy. Jany 30 More snow with strong east wind. Feby. 9 After ten days of stormy weather, today is fine and bright.

This letter especially shows both men in an unaccustomed light: Ruskin, hating tobacco, sends his "master" cigars; Carlyle, hating cant, replies rather in the tone of the temperance advocate, taking a little wine for his stomach's sake: "CHELSEA, 22 Feby, 1865 "You have sent me a munificent Box of Cigars; for wh'h what can I say in ans'r? It makes me both sad and glad. Ay de mi.
Mary, the daught. of Joh. Bonion, bapt., July 20, 1650 Elizabeth, the daughter of John Bonyon, was born 14th day of April, 1654. Thomas Bonion of the town of Bedford, and Elizabeth of the parish of Elstow, were married, May 10, 1656. Ann Bonyonn, Widdo, was buried, 12th day of April, 1659. Thos. Bunyan, buried, Feby. 7th, 1675. Ann Bunyon, Widdo, buried in Woolen, September 25, 1680.

Rutter in a little exhibition of documents illustrative of the South Sea Bubble in the Albert Museum at Exeter: Rec'd 8th feby 1792 of the Honble South Sea Company by the hands of their Secretary Twelve pounds 1s. 6d. for 23 weeks attendance in the Examiners Office. This shows that Lamb's salary was half a guinea weekly, paid half-yearly.
