Bapt. | June 1689 2. | James Oglethorpe of Sir Theophilus and | his lady Elinor, b. 1. James, Westminster. J.G. GIFFORD, Preacher and Assistant. Hence it appears that Oglethorpe was born on the first of June, 1669, and baptized on the second. I was assured by Mr. There were several other baptisms the same day, with different days of birth. Most truly your friend and obedient servant, JARED SPARKS.

There seems to have been a superfluity of members of the family of Pottman in this parish, and the clergyman appears to have been tired of recording their names in his books, and thus resolves: "1557 Mary Pottman nat. & bapt. 15 Apr. Mary Pottman n. & b. 29 Jan. Fire has played havoc with parish registers. The old register of Arborfield, Berkshire, was destroyed by a fire at the rectory.

The figures are: Christ enthroned, blessing with the right hand, and with a roll in the left inscribed "IC XC"; S. John the Baptist with inscription "S. IO. BAPT."; S. Zenobius, with his name in full, commencing with a Greek ζ; and S. John the Evangelist, "S. Johes Eb Agelisa."

Mary, the daught. of Joh. Bonion, bapt., July 20, 1650 Elizabeth, the daughter of John Bonyon, was born 14th day of April, 1654. Thomas Bonion of the town of Bedford, and Elizabeth of the parish of Elstow, were married, May 10, 1656. Ann Bonyonn, Widdo, was buried, 12th day of April, 1659. Thos. Bunyan, buried, Feby. 7th, 1675. Ann Bunyon, Widdo, buried in Woolen, September 25, 1680.

The register commences in 1641, and has been searched to 1750. It confirms the Rev. J. Juke's impression, that soon after Bunyan joined Gifford's church he left Elstow to live in Bedford. Thomas Bonion, buried, Dec. 9, 1641. Margaret Bonion, wife, buried, June 20, 1644. Margaret Bonion, b., July 24, 1644. Charles, the son of Thos. Bunion, bapt., May 22, 1645. Charles Bunion, bur., May 30, 1645.

Bapt. a Vico, in a Tract published at Naples, 1710, “Geometrica ideò demonstramus, quia facimus; physica si demonstrare possimus, faceremus. Metaphysici veri claritas eadem ac lucis, quam non nisi per opaca cognoscimus; nam non lucem sed lucidas res videmus.

Cortez, too, it will be remembered complained that the Devil had positively taught to the Mexicans the same things which God had taught to Christendom. I Apol. c. 66.
