The mystic poet-artist gained some of his most characteristic inspirations while staying here, and it was in the garden of his cottage that he saw a "fairy's funeral," the description of which has been often quoted; it is difficult to judge how much of his visions were, to himself, poetic fancy or actual fact.
Beyond, through an open door, could be seen the tiled bath-room. It was a room that would be charming anywhere, but in that region a veritable fairy's chamber. Truly it is a canny Host who can thus blend harmoniously the human luxuries of the East and the natural glories of the West. In our rides around the Palette I saw Wahb's tracks once again.
The loveliest flowers were trained against the walls, here and there fountains of delicately scented waters refreshed the air, the floor was covered with carpets of the richest hues and the softest texture. There were birds singing among the flowers, gold and silver fish sporting in the marble basins it was a perfect fairy's bower. The Princess sat up and looked about her.
Jehosophat, Marmaduke, and Hepzebiah came up to the "Crying Tree." "What are you doing, Toyman," asked Marmaduke. "Watch and you will see." They were always asking him that question and he was always telling them to watch and see. So they did. In his hand he had his knife, which could make as many things as a fairy's wand. It had four blades and a corkscrew.
The boy was no longer a baby, but had grown large enough to wear the fairy's shoes and, just as she had said, they always helped him to go the right way. Months sped and years sped and another baby boy came to stay in the little brown house, and then another and another and another, until the mother had nine boys.
Prince Ahmed, who had believed that the sultan his father would have been satisfied with so singular and useful a tent as that which he had brought, and that he would not have imposed any new task upon him which might hazard the fairy's displeasure; was thunderstruck at this new request, notwithstanding the assurance she had given him of granting him whatever lay in her power.
"I shall set workmen upon it at once, to make a veritable fairy's bower of it ere you behold it, and it will be ready for us by early spring. "We will spend the intervening time which will be our honey-moon either in Florida or abroad, as best pleases you. Your will shall be my law. I will make you so happy, Jessie, that you will never regret the hour in which you gave your heart to me.
This afternoon, however, they sparkled and seemed to challenge the whole world to find a happier mortal. She walked along, her step light as a fairy's, her skirts still blowing at the whim of the breezes. "I think I will stop and see some of the girls," she said to herself, but she changed her mind the next minute and went home instead.
With the greatest delight she took them out of her pocket and looked at them. They were as bright and beautiful as ever, and the fairy's prophecy returned to the Princess's mind. "'With my balls and my ready wit I shall yet conquer the evil powers that are against my poor Prince, she said to herself cheerfully. 'Courage! all will be well."
Fluttering with flags at a review at Spithead, the battleships seemed out of their element; giants trying for a fairy's part. Display is not for them. It ill becomes them, as does a pink ribbon on a bulldog. Irresistibly ploughing their way they presented a picture of resolute utility guns and turrets and speed. No spot of bright colour was visible on board. The crew was at the guns, I took it.
