The great work of Lord Kingsborough, which contains a fac-simile of this curious document, reproduces also an ancient interpretation of the matters contained in it, evidently the work of a person who not only understood the interpretation of the Aztec picture-writings, but had access to some independent source of information, probably the more ample oral traditions, for the recalling of which the picture-writing appears only to have served as a sort of artificial memory.
Hewitt bent it across his knee and laid it on the table. "Yes," Dixon answered, "that is Ritter's stick. I think I have often seen it in the stand. But what in the world " "One moment; I'll just fetch the stick Mirsky left behind." And Hewitt stepped across the corridor. He returned with another stick, apparently an exact fac-simile of the other, and placed it by the side of the other.
It was couched in the old-fashioned style of compliment and excuses for the liberty taken, which liberty consisted in requesting to have a fac-simile made of a certain page of a work that he had traced through a newspaper-article to my possession. The object, he said, was to supply the deficiency in a copy of the "Canaan" that had a place in his own library.
He laid it on the table before her. She started, and eyed it with horror. It was a long time before she could speak. At length she said, "And that wicked piece of paper destroyed Robert Penfold." "Not that piece of paper, but the original; this is a fac-simile, so far as the writing is concerned. It was not necessary in this case to imitate paper and color.

And then how seldom will the outward Capability fit the inward: though talented wonderfully enough, we are poor, unfriended, dyspeptical, bashful; nay what is worse than all, we are foolish.
The Massachusetts Building, planned by Wells and Dana, of Boston, is a fac-simile reproduction of the Bulfinch front of the Massachusetts State House on a scale of two-thirds. Its rooms are furnished with veritable colonial furniture.
"Reasons, and good ones," said the artist, laughing; "see where could I find such a picture of life as that, unless among the originals of The Cabin?" He held up his sketch-book and showed a correct delineation of the very scene in which he had so lately been the presiding spirit. One of his best pictures contains this fac-simile of the tap-room, with its guests and furniture.
"Sept: the 9th: Cloathes: 1. Shirt: 3: bands: 8 handkecheirfs: 4 neckcloaths: 7: pa: cuffs: 1. bootes tops: 1 cap: an old towell: a Napkin." The writer was evidently young, poor, and a dandy. The cap was probably that which he wore when he laid aside his wig. will examine the fac-simile in Mr. And that both pencil and ink readings are by the same hand remains to be proved.
beefsteaks in the expression of his eye; his bald pate the fac-simile of a rump of mutton; plum-puddings and apple-dumplings in every curve of his chin; his body the living embodiment of a cask of beer supported by two pipes of generous wine; the whole man overflowing with rich juices and essences, gravies, and strong drinks a breathing incarnation of all the good things of life, whom to look upon is to feel good-natured and happy in the present, and hopeful for the future; such a man, in short, as mine host of the Golden Crown, whose portrait I have endeavored to present.
