It is true that what we must perforce call by the awkward names of 'Evangelicalism' and 'Methodism' had many points in common that they were constantly identified by the common enemies of both that they were both parts of what we have termed in the widest sense of the term 'the Evangelical revival' that they, in fact, crossed and interlaced one another in so many ways that it is not always easy to disentangle the one from the other that there are several names which one is in doubt whether to place on one side of the line or the other.
There was, if anything, less probability of theological reconstruction, from this quarter, than from the circles of the older German pietism, with which this English evangelicalism of the time of the later Georges had not a little in common.
The difficulty, however, of disentangling Evangelicalism from Methodism in the early phases of both confronts us at once when we begin to consider the cases of individuals.

Truthfulness, honesty, meekness, courtesy, candour, the relative duties in various capacities of masters towards their servants and servants towards their masters, of parents towards their children and children towards their parents, and the like, are all fully dwelt upon. For convenience' sake we have spoken of the later Evangelicalism as distinguished from the earlier Methodism.

Newman, the most eminent of the new High Church party, said that he indulged in a liberty of speculation which no Christian could tolerate. The High Church movement which marked the second quarter of the century was as hostile as Evangelicalism to the freedom of religious thought.
On the other hand, but for the unfaltering language of the Articles, the hearty tone of the Homilies, and the agreeable readiness of both sides to curse the Italian impudence of the Bishop of Rome and all his 'detestable enormities, our Anglican Church history could never have been enriched with the names or sweetened by the memories of the Romaines, the Flavels, the Venns, the Simeons, and of many thousand unnamed saints who finished their course in the fervent faith of Evangelicalism.
The broadening out early of his mind and the freeing of his thought on doctrinal subjects, which took him far from the narrow evangelicalism of his youth, made the ministry of the church repugnant to him, though he was always a deeply religious man and a force ever making for righteousness.
