The very smell of elephants had always stirred Skag like all clean good earth-smells in one. When he was animal trainer in the circus, the elephants had not been his special charge; but he had seen a good deal of them. They looked to him like convicts; or manikins moving to the pull of the hour-string.
The flush of the morning was in her cheek, and its fire in her eyes, and she was aglow with youth and love. For she had nursed at the breast of nature, in forfeit of a mother, and she loved the old trees and the creeping green things with a passionate love; and the dim murmur of growing life was a gladness to her ears, and the damp earth-smells were sweet to her nostrils.
It had been dark before now it was utterly dark! Suddenly the Gul Moti was aware of a strong earth-smell. There was no stench about. It had a quality of incense made of tree-gums and sandalwood and perfume-barks, all together. Then a dull thudding caught her ear almost rhythmic. . . . The earth-smells deepened and the thudding thickened.
The earth-smells filled her nostrils, her lungs, her blood; tree-gums, sandal-wood, perfume-bark, body-warmth charging the air. And over all wild, and wistful, and pulsing-tender the weaving of Mitha Baba's enchantment through the dark. The thudding all about her on the ground must be the sound of many wild feet! This must be the "toiling in."
On one of those delicious days that came in the middle of this year's April, warmth and fresh earth-smells breathing all about, the wide sprays of the lofty boughs lying tinged in rosy purple, a web-like tracery upon the sky whose azure was divine, the air itself lucid and mellow, as if some star had been dissolved within it, on such a day the little foreign letter came, telling that at length balm had dropped upon the weary eyelids, Elizabeth Sheppard was dead.
Then through the new-washed air, steaming with delicious earth-smells, the Babu led the way down the slopes walking ahead of the coolies in pride; walking behind the foreigners in humility. His thoughts were many and various. The least of them would have interested his companions beyond words. But he was an agreeable guide, ever keen to point out the beauties of his royal master's domain.
So come you, rough from the world's rough work, with all out-door airs blowing around you, and all your earth-smells clinging to you, but with a fine inward grace, so strong, so sweet, so salubrious that it meets and masters all things, blending every faintest or foulest odor of earthliness into the grateful incense of a pure and lofty life.
