In such dryad-like resorts we were tempted to dawdle so long that the big hours of the evening frequently found us still on the breast of the river. I was wont to recline on an impromptu couch of rugs in the bottom of the well-built craft identified with our excursions, where I could feign to be asleep.
The strange, retrospective mood which had come over him this afternoon led his thoughts into strange paths, and he found himself wondering if, after all, it had not been in his power to make her happier. Her dryad-like face, with its sweet, elusive smile, seemed to peer at him now wistfully out of the forest, and suddenly a new and startling thought rose up within him after six and thirty years.
Many days he had been schooling himself for this occasion: this very afternoon he had determined his course of action, which emphatically did not include a fatted calf. And now surged up a dryad-like memory which had troubled him many a wakeful night, of startled, appealing eyes that sought his in vain, and of the son she had left him flinging himself into his arms in the face of chastisement.
He was silent; and Helena withdrew dryad-like into the hollow made by the intertwined stems of the oak, threw her head back against the main trunk, dropped her eyelids, and waited. "Are you asleep, Helena?" said Peter's voice at last. "Not at all." "Then sit up, please, and listen to me." She obeyed. Peter was standing over her, his hands on his sides, looking very manly, and rather pale.
A second later he heard her quick "Come on!" as she struck into the barely perceptible path that led upward, around the shoulder of the mountain. It was a stiff bit of climbing, but she sped along with the dryad-like ease she had displayed on the night when she led him to the cabin.
The dryad-like creature beckoned him forward with her scarf, until suddenly she stopped with the decisive pause of one who has reached her goal. Coming up with her, he saw her unlock the door of a small cabin, which had hitherto not detached itself from the surrounding darkness. "Go in," she whispered. "Don't strike a light. There are biscuits somewhere, in a box. Grope for them.
