In spite of the fact that he was married, Louis very easily fell in love with a charming face; at one time he was infatuated by the duchess of Chateauroux, then by Madame de Pompadour, and later by Madame du Barry.
Having become possest of such invaluable and sacred objects, Louis desired to have them housed with suitable magnificence. The monument breathes throughout the ecstatic piety of the mystic king; it was consecrated in 1248, in the name of the Holy Crown and the Holy Cross, by Eudes de Chateauroux, Bishop of Tusculum and papal legate. Three things should be noted about the Sainte Chapelle.
And if this is not the good sort, the divinely pious, the humanly noble, Fashionable Society feels it to be so, and can hit no nearer. Denis and the Virgin, but by Sun-god Belleisle and the Chateauroux, under these sad new conditions! Which did not prosper as expected.
Most Christian Majesty, now IN EXTREMIS, centre of the basest hubbub that ever was, is dismissing Chateauroux. Noailles, Coigny and Company hang well back upon the Hill regions, and strong posts which are not yet menaced; or fly vaguely, more or less distractedly, hither and thither; not in the least like fighting Karl, much less like beating him.
"I have not the slightest doubt of it; I have known him for many a day. He remembers the scene of Metz, and looks upon you as forming the second edition of the poor duchesse de Chateauroux, who, by the by, was not equal to you in any respect." I burst into a fit of tears, but not of regret for having allowed my late interview with the king to pass in so unprofitable a manner.
Thirty years before, when Louis had been supposed to be on his deathbed at Metz, bishops, peers, and ministers had found in the loss of royal favor reason to repent the precipitation with which they had insisted on the withdrawal of Madame de Châteauroux; and now, should he again recover, it was likely that Madame du Barri would he equally resentful, and that the confessor who should make her removal a necessary condition of his administering the sacraments of the Church to the king, and the courtiers who should support or act upon their requisition, would surely find reason to repent it.
The probability that Bruhl would lie at Chateauroux, five leagues farther on for I could not conceive that under the circumstances he would spare the women would have led me to push forward had it been possible; but the darkness and the difficulty of finding a guide who would venture deterred me from the hopeless attempt, and we stayed the night where we were.
That prudent advice of the excellent son was followed: the Princess was still a prisoner at Châteauroux, when the Prince her husband died, in 1686; and by way of a precaution which cannot be thought of without a shudder, giving as it does the measure of an implacable hatred he recommended that she should be so kept after his decease.
His countenance was less severe when he turned again toward the Baroness, and it smacked more of bewilderment. "It is only my wife," he said. "And the Comte de Chateauroux," said the Baroness. There is no denying that their voices were somewhat lowered.
Not that proud peeress whom she displaced, the Duchesse de Chateauroux; not that low-born and infamous character by whom she was succeeded, Du Barry; not the hundreds of other women who were partners or victims of guilty pleasures, and who descended unlamented and unhonored to their ignominious graves, are here to be alluded to.
