We shall see tall flags like Saracen spears, and the dark green culms of gigantic rushes, and the golden arundinaria the bamboo, and "caña brava," that rival the forest trees in height. Many a form of animal life we may behold. Basking in the sun, we may behold the yellow and spotted body of the jaguar a beautiful but dreaded sight.
Thou shalt see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. 'And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: 2. And both Jesus was called, and His disciples, to the marriage. 3. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto Him, They have no wine. 4.
Jesus had just heard the call to be Messiah, and in his lonely struggle in the wilderness had given a loyal answer to that call, and had set out to do his Father's business in his Father's way. His human friendliness is all the more worthy of note, inasmuch as on his return to Cana Jesus did not take up again the old relations of life as they existed before his baptism.
Woe to thee, Bethsaida! Woe to thee, Capernaum. And all these towns be in the land of Galilee. And also the Cana of Galilee is four mile from Nazareth: of that city was Simon Chananeus and his wife Canee, of the which the holy evangelist speaketh of. There did our Lord the first miracle at the wedding, when he turned water into wine.
He is armed with a long pole of cana brava, one end having an iron point barbed like a spear. This, he launches at them, just as I've heard say whalers do their harpoons. For, if he kept the shaft in his hands, he'd catch it from their lightning, and get strokes that would stagger him.
But then it would be unreasonable indeed to hope that on military subjects she could have that clear insight which she displays with such charming grace, whether we are contemplating the Marriage of Cana, in the Louvre, or thinking over the scenes some of those orange-trees in the Tuileries gardens have shed leaves upon.
Something enrapturing, something white as snow which ascends! The festival bursts upon you, like a picture by Paul Veronese, with the tumultuous magnificence of the "Marriage of Cana"; and then the love-song begins again, oh, how softly! Oh! always higher! higher still 'Did you notice, monsieur, in Beethoven's Symphony in A, that knell which ever and ever comes back and beats upon your heart?
In maturity it seeks a companion to share its pains and pleasures; and, again, Christ is present to consecrate the union. Marriage, which, outside the Church, only serves to perpetuate the curse and bring fresh inheritors of misery into the world, He made holy by his presence at Cana, and chose it as the symbol to represent his own mystic union with his Church.
In the group of musicians in front we recognize Titian and Tintoretto, old Bassano, and Paolo himself. The Marriage at Cana, as a refectory subject, had been unknown till this time: it became popular, and Paolo afterwards repeated it several times.
The gifts of Pierre were not mingled with the rest, nor as yet had they been shown to her bridesmaids, Amelie kept them for a pretty surprise upon another day. Upon the table stood a golden casket of Venetian workmanship, the carvings of which represented the marriage at Cana in Galilee.
