Still less do they say about the extravagance of native customs, partly religious and partly social, which makes the peasant an easy prey to the moneylender, to whom he is too often driven when he has a child to marry or a parent to bury or a Brahman to entertain.
Then comes the name, the True of the True; for the pranas are the True, and he is the True of them. That means: Than that Brahman which is expressed by the phrase 'not so' there is no other thing higher, i.e. there is nothing more exalted than Brahman either in essential nature or in qualities.
And if finally the mode of procedure is something purely negative, it can, owing to this its nature, neither bring about nor in any way assist the instrumental cause. From all this it follows that there is no possibility of injunctions having for their object the realisation of Brahman, in so far as free from the world. Here another prima facie view of the question is set forth. Up. Up. Up. Up.
It has been declared that the members of the four asramas have a claim to the knowledge of Brahman, and that the duties connected with each asrarna promote knowledge. A doubt now arises whether those men also who, on account of poverty and so on, stand outside the asramas are qualified for the knowledge of Brahman, or rtot.
We therefore conclude that as the verb 'vid' is used interchangeably with dhyai and upas, the mental activity referred to in texts such as 'he knows Brahman' and the like is an often-repeated continuous representation. And on account of an inferential mark. Inferential mark here means Smriti.
Lal Bagh includes in its family not only its majority of Christian girls, but also a scattering of Hindus and Muhammadans who have made more or less of a break with ancestral customs. One among these is a member of the Sophomore Class, Omiabala Chatterji of Allahabad. Of Brahman parentage, she was fortunate in having a father of liberal views, who was ambitious for his daughter's education.
For it is not possible that the world and Brahman should stand to each other in the relation of effect and cause, and if it were possible, the imperfections due to connexion with a body would necessarily cling to Brahman. It is not, we say, possible that the intelligent and non-intelligent beings together should constitute the body of Brahman. Up. Up. Up. Up.
Thus know, O wise one! the point of difference between us: Bháradvaja says that a Brahman is such by reason of his birth. But I affirm that he is such by reason of his conduct.... Bhagavá replied: ... I call him alone a Brahman who is fearless, eminent, heroic, a great sage, a conqueror, freed from attachments one who has bathed in the waters of wisdom, and is a Buddha.
It is true that his teaching as to the higher and lower Brahman and as to Mâyâ has affinities to Mahayanist Buddhism, and that later sects were repelled by the severe and impersonal character of his philosophy, but the doctrine of which he is the most thorough and eminent exponent, namely that God or spirit is the only reality and one with the human soul, asserts itself in almost all Hindu sects, even though their other doctrines may seem to contradict it.
He may seize the goods of a Sudra, and whatever, beyond a certain amount, the latter acquires by labor or succession. If he slanders any of the other castes he pays only nominal fines graduated according to classes. Whatever crime he may commit his personal property cannot be injured, but whoever strikes a Brahman even with a blade of grass becomes an inferior quadruped for twenty-one generations.
