Anthologies have been multiplied like all other books, and in the main they have done much good and no harm. The man who thinks he is a scholar or highly educated because he is familiar with what is collected in a well-chosen anthology, of course, errs grievously. Such familiarity no more makes one a master of literature than a perusal of a dictionary makes the reader a master of style.

Or one may construct anthologies of passages which have made an individual and particular appeal to one's tastes.

"The one in all the readers and cram-books and anthologies?" "Is." corrected Joy. "He's quite alive. Yes, that's Grandfather and this is one of my dresses for his receptions," she added as an afterthought. "Good gracious!" breathed Tiddy reverently. They were at the canned peaches and pound-cake by this time. "I I suppose you couldn't say any of his things?" he ended diffidently.

From their days down to the "Elegant Extracts in Verse" of our grandmothers and grandfathers, and thence on to our own time with its admirable "Golden Treasury" and "Oxford Handbook of Verse," there has been no end to the making of poetical anthologies and apparently no diminution in the public appetite for them. Poetry indeed lends itself to selection.

Besides which, especially when she was away from Copenhagen, but when she was there, too, she needed a literary assistant who could look through her MSS. and negotiate over them with the publishers of anthologies, year-books, and weekly papers, and for this purpose she not infrequently seized upon me, innocently convinced, like everybody else for that matter, that she was the only person who made a similar demand upon me.

A composition which had its origin at this epoch was the yokyoku, a special kind of libretto for mimetic dances. Commentaries, too, made their appearance, as did some histories, romances, and anthologies. As Japan during the Ashikaga period sat at the feet of the Sung masters in philosophy and literature, so it was in the realm of art.

Inconceivable that she should be taken by Miss Kendal to see Professor Lee Ramsden. Yet this inconceivable thing appeared to be happening. She tried to remember what she knew about him. He was Professor of English literature at the University of London. He had edited Anthologies and written Introductions.

Any such collection of standard verse, or any of the anthologies of recent poetry, like those selected by Miss Jessie B. Rittenhouse or Mr. W. S. Braithwaite, should be constantly in use in the classroom as furnishing concrete illustration of the principles discussed in books like mine. The other kind of course which I have had in mind is the one dealing with the works of a single poet.

So to those austere souls who regard anthologies as a labor-saving contrivance for the benefit of persons who like a smattering of knowledge and are never really learned, we can at least plead in mitigation that we have high and ancient authority for the practise.

Even the lyrics collected in anthologies are often "mutually repellent particles," requiring through their very brevity and lack of relation with one another, a perpetual re-focussing of the attention, a constant re-creation of lyric atmosphere.
