This plot is a mingling of comedy in the scenes of Laurinda's 'wavering' and the 'humours' of Amyntas' madness, and of tragi-comedy in the catastrophe.

With these two productions may for the purposes of criticism be classed Thomas Randolph's Amyntas, which, however inferior to the others in poetic merit, yet like them stands apart in certain matters of intention and origin from the general run of pastorals, and may, moreover, well support a claim to be considered one of the three chief English examples of the kind.

China was filled with them when we did not know how to read or write. Copyists were much employed in the Roman Empire from the time of the Scipios up to the inundation of the barbarians. The Greeks occupied themselves much in transcribing towards the time of Amyntas, Philip and Alexander; they continued this craft especially in Alexandria. This craft is somewhat ungrateful.

Yet they could not safely transfer their position to any other quarter nor return to Italy, and so, even as late as this, they set all their hopes upon their weapons, hopes not merely of victory but even of preservation. During this delay some of the Celtic force deserted from their side to Brutus, and Amyntas, the general of Deiotarus, and Rhascuporis deserted to them.

Daphnis and Mopsus, Corydon, Alexis, and Amyntas, were all to him real personages, who peopled his solitude, inspired his poetic fancy, and fostered in his imagination the elements of an ideal life where the beauty and purity and freshness of untainted Nature reigned supreme.

This city was taken by the Lacedaemonians in B.C. 379; the Olynthian confederacy was dissolved; the Grecian cities belonging to it were compelled to join the Lacedaemonian alliance; whilst the maritime towns of Macedonia were reduced under the dominion of Amyntas, the king of Macedon. The power of Sparta on land had now attained its greatest height.

"'But, continued the Naiad, 'the shepherdesses had noticed Tyrcis and Amyntas gliding into the wood, and, by the light of the moon, they had recognized them through the grove of the trees. Ah, you laugh!" interrupted Madame; "wait, wait, you are not yet at the end." The king turned pale; Saint-Aignan wiped his forehead, now dewed with perspiration.

How much is staked that Glaucon can beat Ctesias of Epidaurus?” “We don’t match our lion against mice!” roared the noisiest Athenian. “Or Amyntas of Thebes?” “Not Amyntas! Give us Lycon of Sparta.”

His delusions are conceived in a vein no less happy and more distinctly poetical than those of Amyntas. After this Lionel appears in search of Karol, who is in requisition for the distressed Amie. They are about to go off together when Maudlin again appears in the shape of Marian, with the news that Amie is recovered and their presence no longer required.

The maiden modestly seeks to restrain the amorous impatience of her lover, and the scene ends with a song between the two composed in 'Asclepiades. Of this literary curiosity Amyntas' opening stave may be quoted: It is, perhaps, not a little strange that the pedant who made the preposterous experiment of turning the Aminta into English hexameters should nevertheless have been capable of clearly perceiving, however incapable he was of adequately rectifying, the hopelessly undramatic character of the last act of Tasso's play.
