Suddenly he remembered something his mother had said as he left the house something about a distinguished-looking young man who had called to ask for Miss Brent. Mrs. Amherst, innocently inquisitive in small matters, had followed her son into the hall to ask the parlour-maid if the gentleman had left his name; and the parlour-maid had answered in the negative.
Having told these stories so often he now believes that he was present at the first capture of the fortress, under Colonel Pepperal and the New England militia in 1745, and at the second in 1754, when it was taken by Generals Amherst and Wolfe.
I should have been glad of a hoary veteran to totter by my side, and tell me, perhaps, of the French garrisons and their Indian allies, of Abercrombie, Lord Howe, and Amherst, of Ethan Allen's triumph and St. Clair's surrender. The old soldier and the old fortress would be emblems of each other.
A last stand for the preservation of the colony was now made by the French at Montreal, where De Vaudreuil fixed his headquarters, fortified himself, and called in all possible aid, Canadian and Indian. The cautious, but tardy Amherst was now in the field to carry out the plan in which he had fallen short in the previous year.
Perhaps her poor dazed mind groped for him, or perhaps it shrank from his name.... Justine was thankful for her silence. For the moment her heart was bitter against Amherst. Why, so soon after her appeal and his answer, had he been false to the spirit of their agreement?
That afternoon, as Amherst walked out toward Westmore for a survey of the final preparations, he found that, among the pleasant thoughts accompanying him, one of the pleasantest was the anticipation of seeing Justine Brent.
"Now, then, if I present a sufficiently unruffled surface, let us go back to Mrs. Ansell for I confess that her mysterious reasons are not yet apparent to me." Mrs. Amherst looked deprecatingly at her son. "Maria Ansell is devoted to you too, John " "Of course she is! It's her rôle to be devoted to everybody especially to her enemies." "Her enemies?" "Oh, I didn't intend any personal application.
The three armies encamped around the city amounted to seventeen thousand men; Amherst was bringing up his cannon from La Chine, and the town wall would have crumbled before them in an hour. Vaudreuil writes to Charles Langlade, on the ninth, that the three armies amount to twenty thousand, and raises the number to thirty-two thousand in a letter to the Minister on the next day.
This came as such a surprise to Amherst that before he had collected himself he found Truscomb ambiguously but unmistakably offering him with the practised indirection of the man accustomed to cover his share in such transactions a substantial "consideration" for dropping the matter of the road-house.
In silence they descended the many stairs and crossed the shabby unfenced grass-plot between the mills and the manager's office. It was not till they reached the carriage that Mrs. Westmore spoke. "But Maria is waiting for us we must call for her!" she said, rousing herself; and as Amherst opened the carriage-door she added: "You will show us the way? You will drive with us?"
