There were a necklace, two brooches a bar and a circle earrings, a ring, and a comb. Each piece was charming, set in filigree gold with seed-pearls, but perhaps of them all the comb was the best. It was a very large comb. There was one great amethyst in the center of the top; on either side was an intricate pattern of plums in small amethysts, and seed-pearl grapes, with leaves and stems of gold.

Perhaps your Lordship would like some ropes of pearls?" "About half a cable's length," said Lothaw, shortly, "and send them to my lodgings." Mr. Amethyst became thoughtful. "I am afraid I have not the exact number that is excuse me one moment. I will run over to the Tower and borrow a few from the crown jewels." And before Lothaw could prevent him, he seized his hat and left Lothaw alone.

"Enough, my lord," said Mr. Amethyst, with a low bow; "we never search the aristocracy." As Lothaw left Mr. Amethyst's, he ran against General Camperdown. "How is Mary Ann?" he asked hurriedly. "I regret to state that she is dying," said the General, with a grave voice, as he removed his cigar from his lips, and lifted his hat to Lothaw. "Dying!" said Lothaw incredulously.

One day when he sat in Sowla, the city of the Thuls, throned on one amethyst, he decided, and it was proclaimed on the moment by silver trumpets all along the land, that he would be crowned as king over all the lands of Wonder. By that old temple where the Thuls worshipped, year in, year out, for over a thousand years, they pitched pavilions in the open air.

The land about it, and a hut farther down the hill, belonged to Parpon; a legacy from the father of the young Seigneur. It was all hills, gorges, rivers, and idle, murmuring pines. Of a morning, mist floated into mist as far as eye could see, blue and grey and amethyst, a glamour of tints and velvety radiance.

Every tree glittered with sparkling clusters of red, blue, and green light every flower-bed was bordered with lines and circles of harmless flame, and the fountains tossed up tall columns of amber rose, and amethyst spray against the soft blue darkness of the sky, in which a lustrous golden moon had just risen.

As they cling together in great masses the pair must make a flower-bed to themselves above, the clustered spikes of C. amethystoglossa, dusky-lilac, purple-spotted, with a lip of amethyst; upon the ground the rich chocolate and rose of C. Acklandiæ.

I now looked for the French frigate, to see if I could observe anything to show that they had seen the English frigate's signal, lanterns; but she was still carrying on upon the same tack, and, as I judged that she and the "Amethyst" were about seventeen miles apart, I hoped that the lights had escaped her notice.

This announcement alone was enough to take one's breath away, but when the green marble shores of the Mare Nubium; the mountains shaped like pyramids, and of the purest and most dazzling crystalized, wine-colored amethyst, dotting green valleys skirted by "round-breasted hills;" summits of the purest vermilion fringed with arching cascades and buttresses of white marble glistening in the sun when these began to be revealed, the delight of our Luna-tics knew no bounds and the whole town went moon-mad!

Each window was a complex of jewelled splendour; the pillars and walls were painted or draped with lovely tapestries and gorgeous banners: the shrines and altars glittered like Aaron's breastplate, with precious stones jasper and sardius and chalcedony, sapphire and emerald, chrysolite and beryl, topaz and amethyst and pearl.
