No. 68. L'Ambassadeur en Allemagne au Ministre des Affaires Etrangères. Berlin, le 18/31 Juillet 1914.

His fortune had made him a portrait painter, but he was fully equal to other branches of art, as shown by his 'Meier Madonna, and still more by the designs which have been preserved of his famous allegory of 'the Triumphs of Riches and Poverty, painted for the hall of the Easterling Steelyard, the quarters of the merchants of Allemagne, then traders in London.

Two Frenchmen, M. Foucher de Careil and M. Challemel Lacour, who visited Schopenhauer during his last days, have given an account of their impressions of the interview, the latter in an article entitled, "Un Bouddhiste Contemporain en Allemagne," which appeared in the Revue des Deux Mondes for March 15th, 1870. M. Foucher de Careil gives a charming picture of him:

Bernouilli has, however, added much information and interest to his letters, by his description and account of collections of paintings. Par Archenholz. Strasburgh, 1788. 3 vols. 12mo. This work is translated from the German. Voyage de Deux Français en Allemagne, en Danemarck, en Suède, en Russe, et en Pologne, 1790-1. Par Portia de Piles. Paris, 1796. 5 vols. 12mo.

No. 39. Le Chargé d'Affaires en Allemagne au Ministre des Affaires Etrangères. Berlin, le 14/27 Juillet 1914.

The celebrated author of the "Essai sur la Tactique" was employed to visit the different military hospitals in France; his journeys with this object, as well as when he went to join his regiment, were the occasion of these travels, in which there is much animated description of nature, and several well-drawn portraits of public men. Voyage en Allemagne, dans le Tyrol et en Italie. 4 vols. 8vo.

No. 60. Le Ministre des Affaires Etrangères aux Ambassadeurs en Allemagne, en Autriche-Hongrie, en France, en Angleterre, et en Italie. St. Pétersbourg, le 17/30 Juillet 1914.

The first exterior view of the west front, and of the towers, is extremely interesting from the gray and clear tint, as well as excellent quality, of the stone, which, according to Huet, was brought partly from Vaucelle and partly from Allemagne. One of the corner abutments of one of the towers has fallen down and a great portion of what remains seem to indicate rapid decay.

This work is worthy of the author, whose introduction to the History of Denmark is so advantageously known to English readers, by Bishop Percy's excellent translation of it. It gives an excellent and faithful picture of this country in the middle of the eighteenth century, and comprises also the southern provinces of Norway. Voyage en Allemagne et en Suède. Par J.P. Catteau.

The French find it difficult to understand the arrogance which appears ingrained in the German character, and which existed before the war. I read once that in the Guest-book of a French hotel a Teutonic visitor wrote: "L'Allemagne est la première nation du monde." The next French visitor merely added: "Yes, 'Allemagne' is the first country of the world if we take them in alphabetical order."
